–>The Son of God who risks by Craig Blomberg (essential reading)

This is a very interesting article addressing thoughts and questions we all have that we will never fully have answers for, here in our limited thinking, but will certainly one day have the full answers from our glorious God. Still, it is very interesting to follow the debates between the esteemed men of  God who delve into these deeper studies. I first learned of Craig Blomberg from Lee Strobel’s testimonies as one of the expert contributors to Lee Strobel’s investigation for the Case for Creator,Faith and Jesus book series. Here is a short bio for Mr. Blomberg from Denver Seminary:

Craig Blomberg is Distinguished Professor of New Testament at Denver Seminary and who has written numerous articles in professional journals, multi-author works and dictionaries or encyclopedias, he has authored or edited 15 books, including The Historical Reliability of the Gospels (now revised in a 21st century edition), Interpreting the Parables, Matthew for the New American Commentary series, 1 Corinthians for the NIV Application Commentary series, Jesus and the Gospels: An Introduction and Survey; Neither Poverty nor Riches: A Biblical Theology of Possessions; Making Sense of the New Testament; Preaching the Parables; Contagious Holiness: Jesus’ Meals with Sinners; and From Pentecost to Patmos: An Introduction to Acts through Revelation.(See complete bio here)

In a post dated Jan. 04,2011 Craig Blomberg writes:

So, too, we don’t have to solve the probably insoluble questions about how much Jesus knew of his identity and mission and when he knew it. Only the apocryphal Gospels ever suggest he sprang from Mary’s womb able to speak and discourse about his deity! But even as he became more and more cognizant of his role on earth, there is no reason to conclude that it was ever revealed to him that he could not sin. In other words, at some point, he is likely to have known about his need for a sinless life, in order to atone for the sins of the world, without knowing for sure that he could fulfill that task. Now that is a God who risks! Or to put it more precisely, the Son of God who at least senses great risk. What if he failed? Had God no backup plan? His prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane disclosed something of his inability to answer this question but his hope that there was one. No wonder he was in such agony—agony that went beyond his understandable horror at the physical suffering he would endure on the cross.

Such risk magnifies the glory of the incarnation and the inscrutability of our Triune God far more than simplistic affirmations that it was all certain, all known, all understood, by all persons of the Trinity at all points along the way. Jesus of Nazareth would have sensed enormous risk and felt that he might prove wholly inadequate to the task. What an encouragement to us about his ability to empathize with every kind of weakness and temptation we experience (Heb. 4:14-15a), including when we do sin, which of course he didn’t.

„Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” – Philippians 2:5-8

This passage is so rich; we only have space to examine one jewel. It’s the phrase, He „made himself nothing” (v.7a). Notice, Jesus „made Himself.” He didn’t get a memo. He wasn’t pushed out of heaven. He was fully engaged in God’s whole plan!

That phrase there, „made himself nothing,” is actually the basis for a lot of false teaching. Some translations rightly put it, „He emptied Himself.” Then the question becomes, emptied Himself of what? Some falsely suggest that Jesus emptied Himself of Deity and that He literally became a first-century Jewish man; that there was no God, just Jesus, the man. But the Bible teaches the Incarnation of Jesus, 100 percent God; 100 percent man, undiminished Deity dwelling in humanity.

You ask, „Well, what did He empty Himself of then?”

Answer, at least five things:

  • He emptied Himself of glory. In John 17:5, Jesus prayed, „Glorify me…with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.” He gave up the adoration of the saints and angels when He came into this world.
  • He emptied Himself of independent authority. In John 5:30, Jesus said, „I can do nothing on My own.” He brought Himself into a different relationship with the Father, where ALL of His activities and actions had to be cleared in that unusual way. Though equal with the Father, now uniquely submissive to Him.
  • He released the voluntary exercise of His divine attributes. Compare John 1:43–51 with Matthew 24:36 to see how Jesus sometimes was omniscient and sometimes not.
  • He gave up eternal riches. I just want you to try to imagine for a moment the treatment that the Son of God, the King of the universe, gets in heaven. Yet 2 Corinthians 8:9 says, „…though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.
  • He gave up His intimate relationship with the Father. Who can describe the fellowship that exists between the first and second Person of the Trinity? And to hear Jesus on the cross in Matthew 27:46 shouting, „My God, why have You forsaken Me?” He made Himself nothing—for you and me.

Lee Strobel a fost un ateu satisfacut cu pregatiri mari in societate (journalism degree from University of Missouri and a Master of Studies in Law degree from Yale Law School) . Unii dintre noi care citeam (mai mult sau mai putin) ziarul Chicago Tribune (14 ani) il cunoastem de acolo ca ‘investigative journalist’care scria despre coruptie (orasul nostru Chicago este notoriu in privinta asta) si crime. Cartile lui Lee Strobel sint presarate cu exemple si ilustratii din intimplari reale care s-au petrecut in acei ani.

In Pledoarie pentru Hristos, Strobel povesteste cum l-a primit pe Hristos, dupa doi ani de cautare si discutii cu Crestini despre Biblie, Dumnezeu si Isus Hristos. El si-a inceput calatoria de investigare a existentei lui Dumnezeu dupa ce sotia sa  la invitatia unei prietene s-a dus la Biserica si s-a intors la Domnul. Strobel in timpul investigatiei sale de a afla daca exista Dumnezeu cu adevarat (el fiind un ateu convins) cercetind indeaproape Scripturile si orice altfel de informatii din toate domeniile de care a dat, le-a cercetat cu amanuntul si a fost foarte surprins ca sa descopere marele adevar ca desigur exista Dumnezeu cu adevarat, ceea ce l-a facut si pe el sa se intoarca la Dumnezeu iar apoi a  devenit unul dintre cei mai mari apologeti din timpul nostru. A scris citeva carti pretioase de apologetica si a realizat filmari bazate pe aceste carti. Cartile sint foarte recomandate pentru cititorii de toate virstele.

Exista pledoarie pentru Cristos? Daca ar fi fost o investigatie judecatoareasca legala – un proces care sa determine daca Isus Cristos este de fapt Singurul Fiu al lui Dumnezeu – ar fi fost El justificat pe baza evidentelor ori ar fi fost descoperit ca impostor?

Pledoarie pentru Cristos – Procurorul
A incercat cineva sa adune dovezi pentru a face o pledoarie pentru Cristos? Spre exemplu, Lee Strobel, un ateu pe vremea cand a intreprins acest efort, a decis ca va dovedi cu argumente si probe solide ca Isus Cristos este un impostor. Strobel cu siguranta era calificat sa efectueze aceasta sarcina de a face un proces impotriva lui Cristos. El avea Master in Studii Juridice de la Universtitatea de Drept Yale si era reporter premiat la Chicago Tribune. Domeniul de specialitate al lui Strobel era Analist Juridic si a fost promovat la rangul de Editor Juridic la Chicago Tribune. Mai mult, Strobel nu era partinitor fata de apararea lui Cristos – el era ateu!

Strobel imparte pledoaria sa pentru Cristos in trei capitole principale:

Pledoarie pentru Cristos – Examinarea dovezilor
In incercarea de a aduna argumente, Strobel intervieveaza un numar de experti si autoritati recunoscute in domeniile lor de stiinta. El a condus analiza de caz fara nici o partinire religioasa – in afara de inclinatia lui spre ateism. Este remarcabil, ca dupa adunarea si examinarea critica a dovezilor pentru sine insusi, Strobel a devenit crestin. Uimit de constatarile sale, el a adunat dovezile intr-o carte pe care a intitulat-o Pledoarie pentru Cristos, pentru care a fost distins cu Medalia de Aur. Strobel cere de la fiecare cititor un singur lucru – ramaneti nepartinitori in examinarea dovezilor. La sfarsit, analizati dovezile pentru voi insiva, actionand ca singurul jurat in procesul lui Cristos.
