A Chronicle of Redemption-Part 7:Redemption Proclaimed by a New Covenant People David Platt on Romans 9

Brook Hills Church Pastor David Platt preaches Romans Chapter 9

Romans 9 (English Standard Version)

God’s Sovereign Choice

1 I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— 2that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh. 4They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. 5To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.

6But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, 7and not all are children of Abrahambecause they are his offspring, but „Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 8This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring. 9For this is what the promise said:”About this time next year I will return, and Sarah shall have a son.” 10And not only so, but also when Rebekah had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, 11though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God’s purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls— 12she was told, „The older will serve the younger.” 13As it is written, „Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

14What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God’s part? By no means! 15For he says to Moses, „I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 16So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy. 17For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, „For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” 18So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.

19You will say to me then, „Why does he still find fault? For) who can resist his will?” 20But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, „Why have you made me like this?” 21 Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? 22What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, 23in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory— 24even us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles? 25As indeed he says in Hosea,

„Those who were not my people I will call ‘my people,’
and her who was not beloved I will call ‘beloved.'”
26 „And in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’
there they will be called ‘sons of the living God.'”

27And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: „Though the number of the sons of Israel[c] be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will be saved, 28for the Lord will carry out his sentence upon the earth fully and without delay.” 29And as Isaiah predicted,

„If the Lord of hosts had not left us offspring,
we would have been like Sodom
and become like Gomorrah.”

Israel’s Unbelief

30What shall we say, then? That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it, that is, a righteousness that is by faith; 31but that Israel who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness did not succeed in reaching that law. 32Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, 33as it is written,

„Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense;
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

I only got to the first 20 minutes. Thanks for posting this. I got to make some times to write the verses he quoted in the first 15 minutes. Piper has a 20 monolog with only verses.

Gabi, my condolences on the passing of your father; heard only great things about him and I also subscribe to the great things Pastorul Cristian Ionescu said about you as well -from knowing you and your family through others and through the blogs.
I found a treasure trove of David Platt messages, and will post them more frequently and I will also make a David Platt page with his picture on the sidebar (like I did for Francis Chan).
Now I can understand how David Platt teaches in the ‘REAL’ underground churches for 8 hours straight. He actually has committed the Bible to memory. And you know what is the most awesome thing about what God is doing through David Platt? The fact that as Mark Driscoll said about him while together in Chicago recently-he said that David Plat has more degrees than Fahrenheit. Yet, he is a humble, biblically faithful man whose degrees you would never know about from him. I just got ‘Radical together’ and looking forward to reading it. God bless your family!

Thank you for your kind words. There are not many” great things” about me, you just have to ask people that have to deal with me daily :). My Pops , that is different, one thing i can say about him, he loved God and loved his brothers more than (sometimes) his family( and he loved us a lot)
I just google „David degrees ” and you are right, i would never guessed it !!!!
I could have bet he is one of those self educated type of preachers.
You might become reformed in your thinking if you listen to much to Platt, Piper and Chang. Than you will be in trouble, you will hear : ” ba, aia crede in predestinatie” and you will get the „you are a waco” type of look from most of your friends!!! 🙂

Hey, I think my dad and your dad were brothers :-)? and a generation of servants unlike we will see again in our lifetimes!

Remember when Paul said, „Be imitators of me as I am of Christ.” 1 Cor 11:1? That is what I am doing. I’m in the middle of reading John Piper’s book ‘God is the Gospel’ and listen to this-The acid test of biblical God centeredness-and faithfulness to the gospel is this: Do you feel more loved because God makes much of you, or because at the cost of His Son, He enables you to enjoy making much of Him forever? Does your happiness hang on seeing the cross of Christ as a witness to your worth, or as a way to enjoy God’s worth forever?

Now, upon reading this what does this stir up in my heart? Oh the joy unspeakable of the riches of God that we have not yet tapped because we are either trapped in a maze of man made rules and loyalty to our denominations or b/c we are in some sin that we don’t even see as a hindrance to our communion with God. As I’ve said before, it’s reformed preachers (today) that are pointing me to Jesus, therefore I will praise God for the opportunities He provides to speak to us through His servants.

And after all that, am dat si de David Platt! 🙂 God is awesome for sending us all these examples in our lifetime, on top of all the books and testimonies of the books, recording so many great preachers and lovers of God for the last 2000 years.

Agree, that generation , with all the quirks that we make fun of now, had one thing going for them, they loved God and they loved each other. I remember when i was small , every time someone would come in our house, they started with prayer, they end it with prayer, sometimes that is all they had, prayer.
When it comes with Piper, and Platt, i think is a little unfair for the preachers we listen to every sunday, for after you get used to excellent food every day, and than you have to eat something that does not as finesse , you can not enjoy it as much. But the romanians have good preachers, i am thinking of Ezechel Suciu( my favorite), Aurel Popescu, Brie, Pustan, Semenea, Ionescu, Mitoi, Gog,Lascau and i can go on and on…The problem with most of them is they never read Piper 🙂 , their theology is man centered , not Christ centered, but this is to be expected , for they are all arminians, aren’t they? 🙂

No doubt that God has blessed the Romanian community with powerful and good preachers, as you mention and I am sure there are many more we never heard of that are leading God’s people towards the love of Christ and repentance of sin.
But, I consider it a revival when people (especially the younger generation) are so hungry for Christ centered Gospel that they will use their time to seek it and fellowship, even if it has to be through electronics media. Imagine the crowds that followed Jesus during His 3 years of ministry- and that should be us still today-wanting to be in His presence whenever and with whomever preaches Christ crucified. And I think the younger generation is different. I know some younger preachers who do read Piper and listen to Chan’s sermons. I wish some of the preachers would go to a bookstore and read a book by Piper before they reject his teaching. No matter what his sermon or book’s subject, he alwaysinjects Jesus into it. That’s what hooks you and keeps you riveted. It’s like his preaching pulls a veil off your eyes to see the majesty of our Lord!

I am still waiting to see/read a discourse on why we Romanian evangelicals are leaning Arminian. 🙂 (from our leaders of course). PS Some of them (in Romania), now integrate evolution into the Genesis narrative(Baptist) and are getting farther away from the core orthodox beliefs of inerrancy, creation…So, I need to read Piper and Mohler and other Reformed preachers who still believe in the inerrancy of the Word of God because these preachers are the only ones I know that publicly take a stand to defend orthodoxy, and because I do not want to follow people who can not even believe that God could inspire the only text he gave us.
