Kirk Cameron grew up as an atheist for the first 20 years of his life. Today, at the age of 40 he is introducing a new documentary that aims to teach our children the heritage of this country by „taking a lesson from history and planting seeds today, as parents, as Americans and we teach our children and we tell the stories and we remember our history and we can then trust God that 10 years from now, 20 years from now, 30 years from now we will see the fruit of our labors and then there’s hope that God will restore our country. It is an investment into a pure, proper society for the future instead of bedlam”.
Kirk: I learned so much from our founding fathers. But, the more I look around and I open my eyes, I feel deeply concerned for where America is heading if it stays on it’s current course.. I am not a politician but I am a father who cares about the future of my kids and I think there’s something very sick in the soul of America, in general: Financially, we’re hearing about collapse all over the place. Morally, families ae falling apart. Spiritually, it’s scary what I see happening.
Kirk recounts how a Policeman friend and a Navy Seal were arrested in Hollywood for talking to people on the streets with an open Bible.Kirk: Are you kidding me? I mean I would imagine this in China or some other country, but in America? I’m trying to figure out what’s wrong with this country and I don’t have some delusions of grandeur that I can fix the nation, but I want to be part of the solution.
I wonder if we have just forgotten the principles that made us a great nation in the first place? Could we go back and talk to our founding fathers and just listen to them? Is there a way to go back and learn from them the essentials that built this nation? And, could it be that our founders were wiser men responsible enough to know we would get off track, because they’ve seen where they came from and that it is in the hearts of men to be selfish and oppressive, and to grab power and to abuse others. So, could it be that they would know that we would get off track and leave us clues to get back to the treasure that would save us?
As I began to learn about our country’s history I thought: This isn’t the history I learned about the Pilgrims. I thought that Christianity belonged in the church and in my home, but not in the public square. It’s not meant to be principles for nation building. As Kirk went on a journey learning the history of the founding fathers, he decided to do a documentary movie and dig deeper. Kirk traveled to England and saw the prisons that the Separatists were thrown in for their religious beliefs and through his research came to understand that the treasure they brought over to the United States was not in chests made of wood, but in chests of men and women. It was the ideas in their hearts and in their minds. It was the truth of God and His word, their love for Jesus Christ and the belief that if they took God’s word and used it as a blueprint, they could built a nation where men and women and children would be free, free to love God and free to reach the world for Christ. All of these principles were encapsulated and immortalized in one monument that is sitting on top of a hill in Plymouth, Massachusetts; hidden in a residential area behind a forest of trees. Most people have never seen it, let alone heard of it. It is called Monument to the forefathers. It lays out the forefathers strategy for our nation. It is so clearly biblical in its presentation. The monument is 81 feet tall and her name is faith. Her finger is pointing towards heaven

What an amazing message! I hope every person who lives in this country will watch the monumental movie. May God use this movie in a powerful way and may God continue to use Kirk for His glory. There should be more men in this country who are willing to stand and be bold for Christ’s sake.

amen and thanks for that report. We didn’t get the chance to see it, but will definitely buy it when it comes out on DVD. It’s interesting that the motivation that moved our founding fathers to come to this country was so glossed over in our American History classes, isn’t it? It boggles my mind that we were and still are being taught an incomplete or even erroneous history of our country. By doing so we absolutely ignore the saying: Those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it.
And you are right about cowardice, the networks don’t even play the big, religious Hollywood movies at Easter or Christmas anymore, yet they have a playlist of horror flicks for bogus holiday such as Halloween.

he he … You should listen to Todd Friel ( good friends with Kirk) grilling him for inviting Glenn Beck to speak at the opening.
Glen Beck is one of the Mormons that are trying to blur the distinctions between Mormonism and Christianity … He gets invited to preach in many Christian mega churches… For a while , few years ago, listening to him , I really thought he is a Christian .
There is a movement in USA that is trying to reclaim America to the biblical morality… Todd is claiming ( if I understood him right) that that is not the job of the church… The church is suppose to get individuals to repent and believe the Gospel, not to push our Christian values on people…… Because The Gospel saves people for eternity … Morality will only improve life for a very short period of time….
I think he has a valid point…

I agree with what you are saying, however if Jesus calls us to be the light of the world and the salt of the earth, then I don’t think we are either of those if we do not influence the world. For example when light shines, the darkness disappears and when salt is added it changes the total flavor of food. So to me light and salt are not passive types of parables of how one should look, it is more the outcome of our actions. So how can we flavor the world, if not by making our voices heard and shining the light of the Gospel everywhere, and especially in Hollywood. We are definitely called to preach outside of our church’s walls and if we don’t, our kids are going to live in an even more pagan society that will push their own secular brand of religion down their throats on a daily basis. You know the whole „works” and holiness debate (a la Phil Johnson) is somewhat responsible for this too: since some Christians feel like holiness and works are legalistic, then the world is slowly being devoided of even this example of obedience to Christ and so maybe we compensate by being more vocal and banding together with people like Glen Beck, to work for a common goal? Although if Kirk din in fact invite him, I don’t think it was wrong to do that since Christians have sat back and let Glen Beck fight for their cause for far too many years. And by fight, I mean „speak”.
I remember years ago when our kids attended Chicago’s best magnet school and the principal went so far as to ban the colors red and green in the whole month of December (that’s after banning Christmas songs from the Christmas program). Parents said nothing. Guess how the „crazy” principal relented. A bunch of us parents went to the school, and one smart parent recognized this as the media circus event that it could become and called all the local news channels, who promptly showed up and reported on it. Not only did he reverse himself but he was moved to another school later. Lesson learned is that many times, people will do to us only as much as we allow them to, and when it comes to our kids, we should be even more vigilant and demand our voices be heard. Not everyone can afford private school, and maybe that’s a good thing because without christian kids in public schools the who knows what their teaching curriculum would look like.
Also, God has called Kirk out of Hollywood, so it’s only natural that he be a light and salt in Hollywood, from whence he was called. I haven’t had time to delve into Grudem’s „Politics according to the Bible” (though I bought it a while ago), but in skimming through it a bit, it looks like there’s some biblical support for what is today called activism without contradiction to Jesus’s command to submit to authority (render to Caesar…). Should be an interesting read.
Not sure about the separation issue. Are you talking about 2 Corinthians 6:14? I’d like to read some commentaries from our contemporaries as to where is the line drawn between witnessing to a nonbeliever (having conversations about our differences over coffee or lunch) and „having fellowship”.

P.S. On 2 john1 10 – is pretty clear about men who come in our midst with a false Gospel but I wonder how it would apply to this situation? Because, like the Amish, it could be taken to extremes where you totally segregate yourself and take yourself „out of the world” which Jesus says we should not do.John 17:15 „I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one

I have seen Glenn Beck in a very conservative mega church in Texas ( dont remember the name) talking about God and Jesus….
Lets not talk about the prayer meetings that happen in Romania where you have catholics, orthodox and evangelicals participating

I agree with you that it is a major contradiction to have someone preach who is against your church’s doctrine or preaching another Gospel.
But I don’t see such a dividing line when people unite to work towards a common goal, such as promoting the „truthful” history of this country and teaching it to our children. So if Glenn Beck wanted to show up at the premiere because he’s been talking abut this for years, I don’t think it would have been proper to not invite him. With Beck’s Mormonism aside, he does in fact make a great contribution to the public discourse that many Christians are just piggybacking on.
We should be the ones making our voices heard in the public arena as to what God has to say about where we are heading as a Nation. Esther of the OT did just that, she worked to influence on behalf of her people, she did not keep silent, even though she risked death. God calls people to be activists, we just don’t see that many in our times. (Al Mohler stand out to me as one who regularly engages and makes God’s Word known against the backdrop of cultural and public life issues as does Mark Driscoll with the major networks)

Yes you can run in a house with a mormon to save someone , You can feed people together with a muslim, but you can not preach the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ with them… because we are not talking about the same Jesus Christ

I am in total agreement with what you say.
Where we differ is that I don’t think Kirk Cameron was preaching the Gospel with this movie. What I think he is trying to do is open people’s eyes to see that this country’s history is founded on people who fled England in order to be able to exercise their faith. This seems to be just a first step or a first argument in Kirk’s proclamation of the Gospel, and although he is doing it with the support of evangelicals, I think his target audience is unbelievers. I don’t think he is preaching to the proverbial choir here.
And here’s an interesting example I read this past weekend from an old (1972) John Stott book about one of the apostle Paul’s methods: „Paul summed up his own evangelistic ministry in the simple words „we persuade men”. Now „persuading” is an intellectual exercise. To „persuade” is to marshall arguments in order to prevail on people to change their mind about something.
It is the reasoned nature of Paul’s evangelism which explains the long periods in which he stayed in some cities, notably Ephesus. His first 3 months were spent in the synagogue where „he spoke boldly, arguing and pleading about the Kingdom of God.” Later he withdrew from the synagogue and „argued daily in the hall of Tyrannus.” which was presumably a secular lecture hall which he hired for this purpose. Some manuscripts add that his lectures went on from 11 am – 4 pm. And „this continued” Luke tells us, „for 2 years” ”
John Stott does the math and this comes to 3,120 hours of gospel argument in one secular hall in Ephesus.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so glad I picked up this book (and I intend to post it online) because it opened my eyes some more to Paul’s ministry. My impression was that if you speak to an unbeliever a few times and they do not respond, then they probably aren’t meant to. But, look at Paul, He stayed 2 years in Ephesus speaking in a secular hall daily?
There are a lot of people who don’t have the respect for men like Ravi Zacharias and other apologists because they reason and procaliam the Gospel using (the secularists) philosophical reasoning, yet look at Paul, doing the same (as we know from the Mars Hill example) So I think we have to be vigilant, but trust that the Holy Spirit is working through men like Kirk Cameron who have proven themselves (see the Piers Morgan interview, if you haven’t already) and maybe be a little more sensitive to the fact that we need to be contending for the Gospel and reasoning with unbelievers for as long as it takes, including Glenn Beck (but of course he should not be preaching a strange doctrine to anybody in any evangelical church)

Kirk Cameroon is a stand up guy… I didn’t see the movie ..so you could be right..if it was a history movie that did not include the Gospel in it….
Don’t get me wrong..I like Glen Beck politics and moral stands..but he is part of the larger propaganda machine put forth by the Mormon Church that tries to blur the distinction between Christianity and mormonism…

You lnow it’s funny how the more I read, the more I learn, and the more I understand my dad too 🙂
The biggest thing I am learning though is how the Bible can speak to every generation afresh and give guidance. I often wondered what some people thought about the fact that I post a lot of apologetics materials and at the same time claim to be a gospel centered and driven blog, but in reading Stott it just confirmed my own personal experiences in having spoken to people of different religions I know that most of my conversations have ended too soon because I was not familiar with their objections. Now, I firmly believe that the Holy Spirit giudes us (if we pray for Him to do so) when we witness and speak the Gospel, however I have found that it’s a convenient and lazy excuse for me to think that maybe I just should give up because „they just don’t get it”. But look at Paul at Mars Hill. He takes the time to go and look at the statues of all their gods, one by one or he would have maybe missed the statue to „the unknown god” which some commentators say was crucial in demonstrating to these people thier fervent religiosity that they wanted to make sure they missed no god that might have existed and Paul uses it as a segue to teach them about the real God that they were missing.
But think about the example Stott gave, Paul spent over 3000 hours talking to these people. HE had to know their own philosophy in order to deconstruct it using the Gospel and while not all of us are called to be an apostle „Paul”, we are certainly called to follow in his footsteps as he followed in Jesus’ footsteps. Wouldn’t it be great to find a commentary about the nuances between how Jesus preached the Kingdom of God and how Paul spread the Gospel (Jesus often spoke in parables or told the apostles and people he healed to tell no one of certain events, whereas Paul actually preached the whole Gospel, resurrection and all and taught the first century Christians how to apply the Gosepl in their own lives and how to teach it effectively) Reading this little Stott book also opened my eyes to the Jesus vs. Paul deabte which should not be. Jesus and Paul each had different roles becasue of when they preached – pre-resurrection and post-resurrection.
However, as good as this book is, titled „Your Mind Matters”, Stott says some interesting things about charismatics which I don’t agree with and in one place I think he misstates what the Bible says about speaking in tongues. But, for someone who has not been blessed with the gift of speaking in tongues, it is understandable. It just points to the only infallible man who ever lived and that is Jesus Christ!

I love Kirk Camerons heart to serve the Lord. I think he is a genuine Christian who wants the best for his family, friends and community. I think much of his convictions for the documentary film he produced called Monumental: In Search of America’s National Treasure is good. But I think Cameron made a monumental mistake here (pun intended)! The center peice to his film is a statue constructed in 1859 by none other than the Freemasons. Because I have not seen the film myself, I don’t want to come to any particular criticisms as far as what the film proposes as the alleged, “solution” to the problems we face in America. Folks like Chris Pinto and Brandon Howse have done a great job tackling the issue on a much larger stage than anything my blog has to offer. Vito, thanks for the links. If you are familiar with Kirk Cameron’s ministry you would know he loves the Lord tremendously and works for the Lord relentlessly. From the outside looking in, we would probably all ‘think’ his association with Glenn Beck to be an unwise one. However, I surmise that he probably got a lot of good Godly advice afterwards from his mentors and friends who are also in the ministry.
One of the things I often ‘feel’ reluctant to do (from a spending time wisely angle) is to delve into other religion or belief systems (this does not include gnosticism and atheism which we all encounter in our non believing contacts). The reason is (1) it is time consuming yet (2) not at all edifying. As a matter of fact some things just sicken the soul to see, hear or read. So, in this respect, the Derek Prince video was helpful because it shed some light for me on freemasons. I wasn’t aware of the symbolism involved in the erecting of the monument in Cameron’s documentary, but I now surmise there’s probably a lot more of that involved in many of our national monuments and buildings. However, I am not so sure as to the newly ‘discovered’ revisionist history where almost every ‘important’ founding father is now accused of being anything but a Christian since it comes from a faction that is bent on using this ‘newly discovered’ info to indoctrinate this country that there never was a Christian founding nation which is a blatant lie. So, again, since I can not devote too much time to researching myself in order to ‘see’ these original sources for all this info., I will instead trust that there had to be a majority of Godly men and women who came to this country in order to exercise religious freedom and live their life according to the Bible. When we travel through small towns we still see evidences of this truth today. God has His true followers in every generation and their fruit is known by their works.

Kirk Cameron has stood up for God’s word in always so loving and kind. I pray he will not stop. If more people was working as hard as he does to uphold the teaching of the Bible. and shame on people like Ann Curry for trying to make it look like he was putting gay people down, All he said was we all need to love all people even if we don’t believe as they do.

thanks for your comment. Kirk is a devoted follower of Christ, and he shows love and respect to everyone, no matter the circumstance. I have watched him debate nonbelievers, and where I would be frustrated, if I was in his seat, Kirk shows compassion, understanding and love to his opponents. He is a great example of how Christians should act- with grace under fire. God bless Kirk and his wonderful family! God bless you too, Patty!
