JOHN PIPER

It’s June !!!

If you live in a country where the winter is long, then you are probably celebrating that summer has finally arrived. The best part about summer? The absolutely, wonderfully looooooong days. It is a gift for families and an opportunity to spend more time together in fruitful ways. Below are just some suggestions form different websites on activities for the family.

June 1st – International Children’s Day

International Children’s Day is celebrated worldwide by most countries on either November 20 th or June 1st. The June 1st celebration was established by the Women’s International Democratic Federation on its November 1949 congress in Paris and it was originally celebrated as the International Day for Protection of Children.

The June 1st date is a great choice as most children go on their summer break soon after and with the hours of sunlight. And just in case your kids ask you, „Dad (or mom), why are the days longer in the summer?, here’s the answer –

Because whichever hemisphere you are located in is tilted toward the sun. Depending on what point in it’s orbit around the sun the earth is located at, the earth will be tilted either towards the sun, or away from it. In the summer, the sun is higher in the sky, and requires more time to travel from one horizon to the other. The days keep getting longer until the summer solstice, at which point the days start getting shorter until the winter solstice. The halfway points are marked as the spring and fall equinox. Read more: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Why_do_days_get_longer_in_summer#ixzz1wkddN0v

A funny contrast… men vs. women

How’s that verse go:

Genesis 1:27
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

I plead Genesis 1:27 :-). Although, caves are a different story altogether. Which reminds me, anyone ever near Kentucky or Tennessee, don’t miss out on their famous and incredible caves. For that matter, if you are ever near a cave, anywhere, you will be in awe of what you will see. If we make it to a cave this summer, I will be sure to post some video from there.

Browse more Humor infographics.
Two outstanding caves we can personally vouch for:
(1) Meanwhile, here’s a visitor’s video from Ruby Falls, in Tennessee. Located in Lookout Mountain, the cave is 1,120 feet beneath the surface and at the end of the cave is the nations largest and deepest waterfall open to the public. The falls are 145 feet tall.
(2) Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky: On a side note, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary is just a couple of hours drive up the road from Mammoth Cave. See driving directions here.
Mammoth Cave is the world’s longest known cave, with more than 392 miles of interconnected passages—so long that if the second and third longest caves in the world were joined together, Mammoth Cave would still be the planet’s longest cave and have more than 100 miles left over!

Uploaded by  on Feb 5, 2009 Highlights from Mammoth Cave National Park DVD Postcard. 20 minutes of beautiful footage by Russ Finley edited to inspiring music. The best of Mammoth Cave – majestic tunnels, interesting formations, scenery, and more. In a ready-to-mail mailer for family and friends! Available on location and from http://www.finleyholiday.com.
