How to pray for the persecuted Church

From The Barnabas Fund

When we read of the suffering which our brothers and sisters in Christ endure for the sake of His Name, our hearts are moved and we long to bring them before the throne of grace. But sometimes it is difficult to know exactly how to pray, especially if we have never experienced such injustice or persecution ourselves. The Bible tells us that the Church will be persecuted. So if the Lord will continue to allow persecution, what exactly should we ask Him for when we pray about these situations? We hope that the ten points below will be helpful suggestions, under the guidance and prompting of the Holy Spirit.

  1. God that He is all-knowing that in Christ He himself experienced shame, pain and agonising death, as well as the glorious resurrection. Thank Him for His promise: “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Josh 1:5).
  2. Pray that all governments will work for justice and righteousness. While Jesus says that in this world we will have trouble, (John 16.33) He does not say that it will always be present in every place.
  3. Pray that leaders of liberal democracies will use their influence to find ways to reduce, if not end, persecution in countries where it occurs. Just as Paul appealed to Caesar to seek justice (Acts 25), so Christians can appeal to secular governments.
  4. Pray for the growth of the Church where persecution flourishes, remembering that “the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church.”
  5. Pray for strength and courage for those undergoing persecution, and for peace that only God can bring. Thank Him that His grace is sufficient for their needs (2 Cor 12:9). Pray that their faith will not fail, but that their suffering will draw them closer to Him and increase their faith.
  6. Pray that the Holy Spirit will enable persecuted Christians to forgive and love their persecutors (Matt 5:44) and that their Christ-like reactions will have an impact on their persecutors.
  7. Pray that the Lord will be at work in the hearts of those who currently persecute our sisters and brothers to bring them to a saving knowledge of Himself, as He did with Saul of Tarsus (Acts 9).
  8. Thank the Lord for the privilege of entering into the sufferings of our sisters and brothers, remembering that “if one part [of the body] suffers, every part suffers with it” (1 Cor 12:26).
  9. Pray that Christians who are experiencing persecution will not lose the ability to accept or trust genuine approaches from those who have formerly persecuted them, as when the believers in Jerusalem had to learn to accept the reality of Saul’s conversion (Acts 9). Pray that the Lord will give discernment, and relief from unnecessary fears.
  10. Pray for yourself and for persecuted Christians to be spiritually ready for whatever tomorrow brings, be that persecution, respite from suffering or Christ’s return (Matt 24.42).

See links below this short article on different christian persecution news and please pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters as the Bible instructs us to do in Hebrews 13:3

Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were.

Every day, there are thousands of Iranians coming to Christ by hearing the gospel through satellite programs, secret evangelism and even dreams. Interestingly, among those Iranians are also officials within the government itself. An underground church faces persecution, prison charges and in some cases even death when the Iranian government becomes aware of such gatherings held in their own country. This is an inspirational story that portrays the struggles, excruciating emotions and conflicts of Iranian believers that ultimately results in Christians uniting globally through prayer and fellowshipping in their sufferings.

Information and watch list from  the non denominational group http://www.OpenDoorsUSA.org.  Rankings released  January 8,2013

North Korea – For the eleventh year running, this is the most difficult place on earth to be a Christian. In a country of 24.5 million, there are just 400,000 Christians. North Korea is one of the remaining Communist states, and it is vehemently opposed to religion of any kind. Christians are classified as hostile and face arrest, detention, torture, even public execution. There is a system of labor camps including the renowned prison No. 15, which reportedly houses 6,000 Christians alone. But despite severe oppression, there is a growing underground church movement of an estimated 400,000 Christians. We have written on North Korea several times in the past year. At the bottom are some noteworthy articles you can read in order to become more familiar with the brutal hardship that is endured by the Christians of North Korea. You can also read about North Korea’s hidden gulag, below all of the links, and visit the website that published The Hidden Gulag Report.

African countries surge – Open Doors reports that persecution of Christians in Africa vastly increased in 2012. Mali is a newcomer on the list and holds the No. 7 position. Tanzania (No. 24), Kenya (No. 40), Uganda (47) and Niger (No. 50) also moved onto the World Watch List and Ethiopia is one of the strongest risers (from No. 38 to No. 15) on the list. In addition, the small African country of Eritrea made the Top 10 for the first time at No. 10. Libya climbed from No. 26 to No. 17.

Syria made the largest jump on the World Watch List. The country is No. 11 on the list, compared to No. 36 in 2012.

Christians are persecuted in at least 60 countries for their faith. They suffer interrogation, arrest and even death in some of the most dangerous and restrictive countries in the world. For 58 years Open Doors has supported and strengthened believers worldwide through Bible and Christian literature distribution, leadership training and assistance, Christian community development and prayer and presence ministry. The Hidden Gulag

Second Edition

The Lives and Voices of
“Those Who are Sent to the Mountains”

David Hawk

Description: Based on extensive interviews with over 60 defectors and more than 40 satellite photos of North Korean political prisoner camps, the report calls for the dismantlement of the vast North Korean gulag system in which 150,000 to 200,000 are incarcerated.

From Page 158: In the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, crimes against humanity are committed against persons sent to the political penal labor colonies. Evidence shows that:

1. Perceived or suspected “wrong-doers” or “wrong-thinkers,” or in some instances, persons with“wrong-knowledge,”123 and/or their family from the DPRK State Security Agency,124 which refuses to acknowledge the deprivation of freedom and refuses to provide information on the fate or whereabouts of those persons with the intent of removing those persons from the “protection of law” for a prolonged period of time.

2. The abducted persons are subjected to deportation or forcible transfer from the area in which they were lawfully present without grounds permitted under international law.

3. The abducted and deported persons are deposited at distant, remote, penal labor colonies or encampments, where they are subjected to “imprisonment or severe deprivation of physi- cal liberty in violation of fundamental rules of international law.”129 These abductions, deporta- tions and the subsequent imprisonments all take place without any judicial process. There is no arrest, charge, trial, conviction or sentence, as provided in the DPRK Criminal Code and the DPRK Criminal Procedures Code.

4.The prolonged, indefinite detention of family members is a violation of Article 26 of the ICCPR, “…the law shall prohibit any discrimi- nation and guarantee to all persons equal and effective protection against discrimination on any ground such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.” The imprisonment of family members amounts to what the ICC Statute terms as “persecu- tion.” Most family members of suspected wrong-doers or wrong-thinkers are detained for the rest of their lives in sections of the prison camps termed “total control zones.”

5. Once cut off from any contact with the coun- try or world outside of the prison camp, including former family and friends, the imprisoned persons are subjected, usually for a lifetime, to arduous forced labor under extremely severe circumstances. This begins with the provision of below subsistence level food rations.

7. Prisoners are regularly subjected to beatings and sometimes more systematic torture for infractions of prison camp regulations and during interrogations.

8.On numerous occasions, prisoners compelled to observe executions (which are carried out publicly to demonstrate to other prisoners the severe consequences of escape attempts and/or non-compliance with camp regulations) …

9. Prison camp officials and guards are regularly able to exact sexual relations with female prison- ers under circumstances that have been judged to constitute rape or sexual violence …

yes persecution still takes place even in countries such as Russia..

Istorie Evanghelica

A demolition crew accompanied by police tore down the Holy Trinity Pentecostal Church in Moscow this week.

Human rights groups and members of the church were shocked by the late night demolition, which was apparently court ordered.

„Right now officials destroyed our church building … now 4.30 am – Moscow time,” a church member wrote in an email to Frank Wright, president and CEO of the National Religious Broadcasters.

„They came at night to avoid conflict with people,” he continued. „All church property is there… some were stolen, other[s] – destroyed. We can do nothing… just pray and cry.”

See exclusive pictures of the church demolition on George Thomas’ Facebook page.

The man explained that the Russian government is „forcibly” relocating churches, giving them land in more remote areas to build a new church.

„The usual conditions are that the church develops the property within some specified time…

Matt Chandler – Holiness Part 3 – The „How” Matters

See Part 2 – Holiness – The Goodness of God

Read the notes from the entire sermon here- http://www.thevillagechurch.net/media/sermons/transcripts

Here’s a few paragraph excerpts from the sermon:

  • So far we’ve answered some pretty big questions. We’ve looked at the holiness of God, who he is, how different he is, what really his holiness is, and then last week we looked at God’s ferocious commitment to making us holy. (See parts 1 & 2). We’ve left some pretty big questions unanswered, and the primary question is how he goes about making us holy.
  • How you understand the process by which you become more and more like Jesus, more and more holy… The more you understand that process correctly, the greater life, freedom, and love for God you’ll have, and the more you misunderstand how that takes place, the more wearying and difficult the Christian life will be to you.  In this great exchange between God and you, the only thing you bring to the table is the sin that makes your salvation necessary. You don’t have the tools or the materials with which to build a house that’s holy. You don’t have them. So if you get away from the One who can build that holy house and try to build it yourself… What the Bible is going to repeatedly tell us is you can’t even make a shack of your own abilities and own efforts. So it’s very important for us to understand how we become holy, so we might walk in the fullness of joy that God has brought for us in our adoption as sons and daughters as he makes us a holy people.
  • The very good news is that God has decreed, chosen, predetermined we would become holy and blameless in his sight. We are going to have a positional holiness before God. We are going to be seen and viewed by God as a holy people. But he still doesn’t say really how he goes about that except that he accomplishes it in Jesus somehow. Ephesians 2:1-10 is going to unpack it more fully. So in Ephesians 2 now, starting in verse 1: „And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience–-among whom we all..
  • Now there are some verses and some ideas in the Bible that seem to strain this idea. They put a lot of strain on it. Let me give you an example of just one. I never want to hide from these kind of verses. I actually want to show you how they would work into the gospel. Hebrews 12, verse 14 simply says, „Strive [struggle, work] for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.” Here’s what you have to start to do with texts like this. There are a lot like this, even like, „…train yourself for godliness…” You can get into all these texts that seem to put a lot of effort on you in order to become the holiness the Bible just clearly said is actually gifted to you by God alone in Christ. So how do you strive toward the holiness without which no one is going to see the Lord if holiness is a gift of grace through faith? How do you strive for something that’s a free gift? I think here’s how you answer that question in light of the gospel. Let me tell you how you strive for holiness, how you train yourself for godliness, how you pursue righteousness and avoid sinfulness under the banner of the gospel. Here’s how you strive: You strive by faith through grace. If that’s confusing to you let me make it simpler: Fix your eyes on Jesus.
  • So with unveiled faces, you and I now have our eyes fixed on Jesus. We are beholding the glory of the Lord Jesus, and in our beholding of the Lord Jesus we „…are being transformed into the same image…” What’s the image? The image of Jesus, the holiness of God, so that by beholding Jesus we are being transformed into the likeness of Jesus. Look at how this works so we can be patient. „…from one degree of glory to another.” I love that the Bible is so honest about this. As we fix our eyes on Jesus Christ, as we see and savor Jesus, we are transformed from one degree of glory to the next.
  • So how should we fix our eyes on Jesus? Not only is he the founder of my faith, not only is he going to perfect my faith, but look at what in particular we are to look at. „…who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” Where are our eyes focused? Our eyes are focused on the founder and perfecter of our faith who, filled with joy, died our death and rose from the grave, showing that all of our sin has been paid for. Therefore, to fix our eyes on Jesus Christ is to pursue holiness and to avoid sin.
  • But what ends up happening to many of us is we take our eyes off of Jesus Christ and go, Okay, let me pursue Jesus Christ… I have my eyes off of him, but let me try to pursue him, and then let me try to avoid sin, and honestly, nine times out of ten we reverse those. Let me avoid sin and try to pursue him. But the Bible continually teaches it a completely different way. „Get your eyes on Jesus. Pursue Jesus. Chase after Jesus.” It’s the same thing over and over. I don’t know if you’ve picked up on this yet. I have one sermon. That’s it. One. We just come out of a different text every weekend to preach it. Because this is what we need to be reminded of over and over and over and over and over again, always. You don’t become holy by trying to become holy. You become holy by fixing your eyes on Jesus Christ, and his decree declared holiness over us because of his life, death, and resurrection. He is the founder and he is the perfecter of our faith who died our death and has risen from the grave to prove that he paid the bill in full and has victory over sin and death.
  • Well how do I fix my eyes on Jesus, Matt? How do I fix my eyes on him? How do I look, how do I gaze, how do I behold his glory? Well God has given you all sorts of things to help this. He has given you the Word of God. The Bible is there so you might see who Jesus is, what he’s like, the nature and character of God. He has given you Christian community. He has given you a place like this where we can just come together and we can make much of Jesus. We can talk about him. We can rally. We can celebrate with one another who Jesus is and what he has done. We get to sing to him and sing about him.

Bishop Ishmael Prince Charles este Pastorul Bisericii New Testament Church of God International Worship Center,  in Baughers Bay, Tortola, British Virgin Islands, o biserica cu 800 de membrii.

PREDICA lui ISHMAEL PRINCE CHARLES incepe la minutul 90 (1 ora 30 min):

I was preaching once in Leicester England, there were probably 3,000 to 4,000 young people at that youth convention and I looked and I got so scared that the only thing I remembered was ‘hallelujah’. And, I thought I remembered, maybe it was at Lee University, „Every time you say the word ‘hallelujah’ you are bringing down one kingdom and you’re lifting up another kingdom.” If you catch that, it’s not a hype. Tonight, there are kingdoms in this house that will try to elevate themselves over the kingdom of God. But, tonight we are here to lift up the name of Jesus, above every other name. His name is power, His name is glorious. His name is excellent. The Lord, our God is in this place.

The Church of God is going through what we are calling ‘one of the toughest times in history’, but I declare to you that we are going to rise again. Thank God for yesterday, but our brightest days are ahead of us. There is a reason why we’re going through something, there is a reason we see theologians and philosophical people doing all this stuff. There’s a reason for doom and gloom. There’s a reason for why we pray the way we pray. There’s a reason for the hysterical bombardment and all the boredom that we see and the reason is this: We are about to go through a perfect storm. Because our God is perfect. So tonight here is the key statement you must catch in this message. Get it: There’s a powerful spiritual force that is about to be released on the earth, over the church. It will shake the very foundations of the kingdom of darkness and the church will rise again. Get ready to receive this power! Get ready to stand up and declare again, „Jesus Christ is Lord of all!”

We know the story in Joshua 1, where God Himself spoke to the servant Joshua Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them—to the Israelites. I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses. The missionaries that are here tonight, God has positioned. God has positioned the Church of God to take back territories all over the world. Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates—all the Hittite country—to the Mediterranean Sea in the west. No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. How many of you know tonight that God is with us?

I want to say to the people of God tonight, „God’s word is saying to somebody: ‘Be strong in these hard, turbulent times'”. Why? Because God is with us! I want to give you a word tonight and it is simple, „It’s time to rise again!” In spite of what the enemy is saying. We have seen it tonight with our missionaries.

(1) It’s time to rise again, but in the power of the pure Word

The problem that I have found out is this: We have deviated from the Bible.

We have deviated from the power of the purity of this book. That’s why we have so many problems. There is no money shortage or power shortage in the kingdom. We are diverted. We have moved away from the power of the Word. The Bible says, „In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God.” And the Word is God Himself!

God told Joshua to meditate. The problem we have… Can I just be myself here? … A bunch of preachers are preaching ‘donkey heads’ instead of the Word. Preaching people’s business, instead of the Word. Preaching gossip and all sorts of modern day mess instead of the Word. Preach the Word! It’s time for the Word again. Let’s get back to the Word.

WHat I have found in this word is the very character of God, the essence of the qualities of God that tells me how to live. How many know that we are pentecostals? I was a little baptist boy, 14 1/2 years old on the island of St. Vincent. One night I heard a Church of God of prophecy preacher and he spoke in tongues on the roadside. I said, „God, if that thing is right, I need it”. I went home, knelt at my mother’s bedside and my lips started trembling. My tongue was stuck in my mouth. I couldn’t talk properly. What came out of my mouth, I couldn’t understand it, but it was so sweet. God understood what I was saying. He baptized me in the Holy Ghost. We are pentecostals. Something more than what ought to be seen must happen. If we have the power of this book, something must be wrong.

I love the missionaries of the field, because when they go in the field they have to stand on the word. The miracle we heard and saw from Zambia tonight is because the pure power of the Word. There is power in this Word. There;s life in this world. There’s glory in this Word.

(2) It’s time to rise again out of our competitive jealousy

Competitive jealousy is causing us not to live in the Word. The devil is the instigator of competitive jealousy. He empowers agencies to destroy and blocks the anointing. But the power of the Word is by the Holy Spirit outpouring, it’s what empowers us. There’s a problem in the church. One of the major pitfalls that blocks the missionary operation,  that block the local church from arriving at its destiny of greatness is competitive jealousy.

It stands behind the pulpit. It sings in the choir. It sits in the bands, on the usher boards, it sits on the pastor’s counsel board. The power of the enemy comes down, it’s a secret killer. It’s a spirit that says, „Why do they prefer him over me?” When bitterness overtakes a christian, it leads to nothing else but an empty self that depends only on the devil’s agencies. Competitive jealousy has a root in the preference over one another.

And we have leaders who lead by intimidation, manipulation, victimization and discrimination. Tonight the church of God is going to rise out of this spirit. The leaders must be raised up again to lead with love, to lead with joy. Come out of this spirit of competitive jealousy, there’s too much of it in the church. Let’s rise up out of competitive jealousy, the same spirit that overcame Cain and Saul.

Our present position is not an indication of our future potential in God.

(3) It’s time to rise again and come to grips with ourselves

We must begin to understand that we must not lead by the enemy’s plan.It is time to return to true biblical, pentecostal spirituality. I want to read something to you: „The church today wants to be everything, rather than the people of God. That’s why we have an identity crisis. The church needs to constantly have the Gospel afresh in this culturally driven society. The church has an anemic epistemology today, hermeneutics of suspicion; we are prone to doubt what God is doing. We need to get back to the power of Pentecost. Peter and John did not doubt the power of Pentecostal spirituality.

Peter and John said, „Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” What they had, the apostles gave. The problem is that most of the people today have nothing to give, because they’re full of themselves… Empty vessels standing behind the pulpits. Grudge, hatred, envy, malice, preaching every Sunday…

The Bible said, when the lame man got healed he  started leaping, shouting and jumping when Peter healed him. Arise and leap and jump. When was the last time in your church that you’ve seen arising? When a church possesses pentecostal spirituality there’s nothing that can stop you from rising. Why is it that we are not seeing the recovery? Because the church has become a consumer item. The church has become what is called in theology a tithing unit. We see the church now, instead of walking with God, the church becomes an emblem of consumer mentality, where sometimes, we just consume in the church instead of having power.

The problem with Pentecostals is that they have compartmentalized their lives. They don’t see their whole lives under the leadership of Christ. This is why so many preachers, great leaders are falling. Because we separate Scripture from its ethics. We separate facts by values. We separate personal faith and say it should be a private matter. But, in this western culture, I’m calling you back. They say the neutrality of all knowledge is a deception of the devil. The essential biblical spirituality is that ‘Now is the time to rise again!’ The church is not just a tithing unit for a consumer relationship. The church is a place of divine capability. The church is a place where the power of God resides, where the sick must be healed, the lost must be saved!

Pastor Ishmael Prince Charles concludes with a poignant story he heard of a young woman, who had a dream when she was 12 years old that she would have a child and the Lord told her what to name him. Something strange happened. A man came to her village and this young girl, who was now 15 told the man, „Pastor, I was already a christian the night I got pregnant in a one night stand. She said I was studying to be a school teacher and now my life is a mess. I am just about to have an abortion”. The holy spirit, speaking through the pastor, said, „Don’t touch the child. I need him”. She brought the child into the world and she said her grandmother kicked her out. She lived by the roadside, in a shack. The child was born in a shack and he contracted pneumonia and asthma. At the point of his last breath, close to death she put him down and arranged his hands to his side. She was so poor she lay him in the street. She said she sat there, a lonely teenager, crying and the same voice spoke and said, „Pick up the dying child, take him to the river and dip him 3 times and the boy shall live”. She said she was so frightened, there was such a bright light. The voice said again, „Pick up the child”. She looked and picked him up and slung the boy over her shoulder. She walked about a mile to the cold, running river and dipped the child in the water 3 times. And the little boy got up and breathed again. That little boy is me.
