When man first saw planet earth – Astronauts Describe The ‘Overview Effect’ That Transformed Their Minds

„He spreads out the northern skies over empty space; he suspends the earth over nothing. He wraps up the waters in his clouds, yet the clouds do not burst under their weight. He covers the face of the full moon, spreading his clouds over it. The pillars of the heavens quake, aghast at his rebuke. By his power he churned up the sea…. By his breath the skies become fair…. And these are but the outer fringe of his works; how faint the whisper we hear of him! How then can we understand the thunder of his power?” (Job 26:7-9, 11-14)

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. (Romans 1:20)

A short film released by Planetary Collective called „OVERVIEW” has some interviews and some fantastic video footage, with astronauts who described their experience seeing Earth from space.

OVERVIEW from Planetary Collective on Vimeo.

On the 40th anniversary of the famous ‘Blue Marble’ photograph taken of Earth from space, Planetary Collective presents a short film documenting astronauts’ life-changing stories of seeing the Earth from the outside – a perspective-altering experience often described as the Overview Effect.

The Overview Effect, first described by author Frank White in 1987, is an experience that transforms astronauts’ perspective of the planet and mankind’s place upon it. Common features of the experience are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.

‘Overview’ is a short film that explores this phenomenon through interviews with five astronauts who have experienced the Overview Effect. The film also features insights from commentators and thinkers on the wider implications and importance of this understanding for society, and our relationship to the environment.

    amazing video…

    The beauty of God’s creation is breathtaking.

    1The heavens declare the glory of God;
    the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
    2Day after day they pour forth speech;
    night after night they display knowledge.
    3There is no speech or language
    where their voice is not heard.a
    4Their voiceb goes out into all the earth,
    their words to the ends of the world.
    In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun,
    5which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion,
    like a champion rejoicing to run his course.
    6It rises at one end of the heavens
    and makes its circuit to the other;
    nothing is hidden from its heat.

      like you, when I watch something in nature, it immediately brings to mind Scripture and thought of almighty God! It’s amazing how insightful Job was (who never got to see the universe) in his praise of God from the observable things he saw form down here.

        Excellent video..but almost as fascinating was listening to the astronauts trying to figure some reasons …total blindness…

          I like this cartoon from the Christian Post – it is very telling-

          The caption under the picture says: I’m not listening! I’m not listening!
