Don Carson: The God Who Is There – Part 11. The God Who Declares the Guilty Just

d a carsonDon Carson explains Romans 3:21-26.

Carson begins: If we take that title seriously, we might conclude that God is unjust. For, surely, only an unjust judge would declare guilty people to be just. Isn’t it His job to declare the guilty, ‘guilty’ and to declare the just ‘just’? Mind you, that would be bad news for us, because the Bible goes to great length to point out how universal and how repulsive all our sin is to God. If God declares the guilty ‘guilty’, we are all damned. Yet, one of the most astute of Jesus’s earliest disciples, the apostle Paul, goes to considerate length to explain how the cross itself shows God to be simultaneously just, and the one who declares guilty people to be just. If the cross and the resurrection stand at the heart of the Gospel, then, explaining a little more closely what Jesus’s death and resurrection achieved is nothing other than explaining a little more closely what the Gospel is.

Romans 3:21-26

The Righteousness of God Through Faith

21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, althoughthe Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
