Depresiunea Turpan, situata la poalele Muntilor Bogda din nordvestul Chinei, este un amestec ciudat de lacuri sarate si dune de nisip. La fundul bazinului este Lacul Aydingkol, care apare albastru in imaginea satelitului Landsat7, fotografiata in anul 1999. Odata un lac permanent, dar ramanand doar o mlastina de apa sarata, lacul fiind la 155 de metri sub nivelul marii, ceea ce-l face sa fie al treilea dintre cele mai joase puncte de pe suprafata pamantului, dupa Marea Moarta si Lacul Assal din Africa. O regiune cu temperaturi extreme, Depresiunea Turpan se intinde pe o suprafata de 50,000 de kilometri patrati. Orasul Turpan, situat in partea de mai sus a depresiei (in zona nordica),a fost in antichitate un important centru comercial pe asa numitul Drum al Matasii.

The Turpan Depression, nestled at the foot of the Bogda Mountains in northwestern China, is a strange mix of salt lakes and sand dunes. At the bottom of the basin is Aydingkol Lake, which appears blue in this Landsat 7 image from 1999. Once a permanent lake and now a salty swamp, the lake is 155 meters below sea level, making it the third lowest place on Earth’s land surface after the Dead Sea and Africa’s Lake Assal. A region of temperature extremes, the Turpan Depression extends over 50,000 square kilometers. The city of Turpan, located in the higher northern part of the depression, was an important trading center on the ancient Silk Road.
