Deja din anul 2011 s-a raportat aceasta posibilitate in presa locala (cel putin) in Oregon, probabil si in Washington, dar recent presa raporteaza din nou pericolul unui cutremur cataclismic.

ENGLISH –

… place deep down inside the Earth that few people living along the West Coast know about.

Roughly 80 miles off the coast of Oregon, there’s a place deep down inside the Earth that few people living along the West Coast know about. But they will someday, years or even decades from now.

That’s because this is a place called the Cascadia subduction zone, where a pair of tectonic plates are now grinding up against one another under the Pacific Ocean, and they’re headed – slowly but inevitably – toward a moment when the pressure now building there will become too great to bear.

When that happens, a huge swath of the Pacific Northwest will be engulfed in the worst natural disaster in the history of North America, writes journalist Kathryn Schulz in a terrifying new article published this week in the New Yorker, titled „The Really Big One.”

What do scientists think will happen?

  • A massive earthquake that would lay waste to thousands of homes and buildings, devastate the power grid and energy infrastructure, and even do things like causing the edge of the continent to drop by as much as 30 feet and liquefying solid ground.
  • A mega-tsunami that would arrive onshore across the Northwestern coast within 15 minutes of the earthquake’s strike, creating a „700-mile-long liquid wall” that would render the region „unrecognizable.”
  • The deaths of 13,000 people, or perhaps many more, as well as more than 1 million left homeless, and the need to provide food and water for more than 2 million for perhaps months to come.

Kenneth Murphy, the director of the division of the Federal Emergency Management Agency that’s responsible for Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington, said in an interview with Schulz, „Our operating assumption is that everything west of Interstate 5 will be toast.”

What makes this scenario even scarier is that while nations like Japan have developed and implemented earthquake warning systems that automatically shut down power plants and railroad lines, alert hospitals to interrupt surgeries and sound alarms for the general public, no such alert system is in place in the Pacific Northwest.

The story has sent waves of alarm shooting through social media, prompting three Seattle-based scientists and writers to take to Reddit yesterday for an „Ask Me Anything” session during which they answered any and all questions from readers related to the article.

John Vidale, director of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, participated in the AMA and cautioned readers not to panic about the story and its implications. „Overall, it was a well-written and documented article,” he said. „The scenario left an impression of much greater devastation that is anticipated to occur, however.”

When asked to elaborate, Vidale said, „Communications may black out, transportation may grind to a halt, stores conceivably could run out of goods for a while, but that doesn’t constitute „toast” in one’s mind. The speaker must have been referring to some aspect of those problems, not to smoking rubble.”

For what it’s worth, FEMA’s Murphy told the New Yorker that he hopes the science is off, especially because the odds of such an earthquake striking the Northwest in the next 50 years are estimated to be „one in three.”

“This is one time that I’m hoping all the science is wrong, and it won’t happen for another thousand years,” Murphy added.

Pacific Northwest Cascadia Subduction

9.0 Earthquake Expected At Any Time

The Associated Press 2013:

More than 10,000 people could die when — not if — a monster earthquake and tsunami occur just off the Pacific Northwest coast, researchers told Oregon legislators Thursday.

Coastal towns would be inundated. Schools, buildings and bridges would collapse, and economic damage could hit $32 billion.

These findings were published in a chilling new report by the Oregon Seismic Safety Policy Advisory Commission, a group of more than 150 volunteer experts.

In 2011, the Legislature authorized the study of what would happen if a quake and tsunami such as the one that devastated Japan hit the Pacific Northwest.

The Cascadia Subduction Zone, just off the regional coastline, produced a mega-quake in the year 1700. Seismic experts say another monster quake and tsunami are overdue.

„This earthquake will hit us again,” Kent Yu, an engineer and chairman of the commission, told lawmakers. „It’s just a matter of how soon.”

When it hits, the report says, there will be devastation and death from Northern California to British Columbia.

Many Oregon communities will be left without water, power, heat and telephone service. Gasoline supplies will be disrupted.

The 2011 Japan quake and tsunami were a wakeup call for the Pacific Northwest. Governments have been taking a closer look at whether the region is prepared for something similar and discovering it is not.

Oregon legislators requested the study so they could better inform themselves about what needs to be done to prepare and recover from such a giant natural disaster.

The report says that geologically, Oregon and Japan are mirror images. Despite the devastation in Japan, that country was more prepared than Oregon because it had spent billions on technology to reduce the damage, the report says.

Jay Wilson, the commission’s vice chairman, visited Japan and said he was profoundly affected as he walked through villages ravaged by the tsunami.

„It was just as if these communities were ghost towns, and for the most part there was nothing left,” said Wilson, who works for the Clackamas County emergency management department.

Wilson told legislators that there was a similar event 313 years ago in the Pacific Northwest, and „we’re well within the window for it to happen again.”

Experts representing a variety of state agencies, industries and organizations expanded on the report’s findings and shared with lawmakers how they have begun planning.

Sue Graves, a safety coordinator for the Lincoln County School District, told lawmakers that high school students in her district take semester-long classes that teach CPR and other survival techniques in the wake of a giant earthquake. The class teaches students to „duck, cover and hold” when the ground starts shaking.

Maree Wacker, chief executive officer of the American Red Cross of Oregon, said it is important for residents to have their own contingency plans for natural disasters.

„Oregonians as individuals are underprepared,” she said.

God Bless You!

In viata asta sau dincolo tot ai Lui sintem. Sintem copiii Lui – dece traim cu frica? Sora mea are programata o vizita in California si in Washington – Da, este speriata si nu inteleg dece. Sigur, trebuie sa ne rugam si sa ne pregatim in o anumita masura, dar frica nu are ce cauta in viata noastra.
