Many thanks to American legal group Liberty Counsel for their precious help. We are referring to the extensive and exhaustive legal memo in the Constitutional Court of Romania in support of our initiative, pointing out the intrinsic and common-sense benefits of natural marriage.

So, thank you, Chairman Mathew D. Staver and President Anita L. Staver; and most especially thank you Horațiu Miheț (Chief Litigation Counsel and a native of Romania).

Liberty Counsel Successfully Defends Natural Marriage in Romania

Jul 20, 2016

Harry MihetBUCHAREST, Romania – In a major victory for natural marriage and the right of Romanian citizens to determine their own destiny, today the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) approved as constitutional a voter initiative that would permanently memorialize marriage as the union of one man and one woman in Romania’s Constitution. More than three million Romanian citizens (in a country of less than 20 million people) signed the petition to place this issue on the ballot – by far the most signatures ever obtained on any referendum in Romania’s history. Today’s unanimous 8-0 decision by the CCR means that the referendum can now move forward.

Liberty Counsel submitted a major brief in support of the referendum…

I am very impressed and surprised by this kind of support by a populace in today’s world, rodi. It appears your judges are not near as „leftest” as American judges and it is nice that the Liberty Council gets another victory as it was saddened by the same subject here in America. Things relating to marriage seem like they have changed here overnight. I know our „new definition” of marriage is ungodly as do most Christians and that it (the redefinition) was in the works for awhile.

If I could, I would love to visit Romania. I don’t know the language but I feel like I know the people. They are generally more Godly than Americans it seems.

Romanian people are lovely and welcoming people. Because the country is overwhelmingly orthodox, they are holding out on these issues such as gay marriage, as is Poland, which is overwhelmingly catholic. These two are the holdouts in an otherwise liberal Europe, way more liberal than we are in the US. Romania is a beautiful country to visit, it has so many historic buildings in its big cities and Bucharest, the capital was considered the Paris of eastern Europe in the earlier part of the 20th century. And many, many of its young people speak English and there are actually some businesses for and run by english ex pats in Bucharest, too. I hope you will be able to go one day, as I hope we will also one day return there to visit again.

Thank you, rodi, for this information.

I thought that most of Europe was more liberal and less Christian (the two terms aren’t always tied as you know) than America. We seem to be trying to „catch up” in some ways, though. It is always nice to get the viewpoint of someone like you who has more contact with Romanians and Europe in general than I do.

Thank you for your kind words. I hope that you will be able to visit as you probably know so many people there.

I know that many places in Europe make American cities look like they are still in the crib despite some of the fancy trimmings in some U.S. skylines.

The Romanians I have met where I live are just as you have described. The Romanian church that I’ve visited has a real family atmosphere. They also seem very serious about their faith, something I respect very much. 🙂
