November 26, 2013

Seven-year-old Anmol laughed and played; he sang songs and learned Bible stories at Sunday school—and later, he was cruelly tortured and killed for being a Christian.

The last time Anmol’s parents saw their son alive was right before he left for Sunday school November 17. Anmol never returned home that day. His mother and his father, Harish, assumed he had gone to play with his friends, like he had done in the past. But when he didn’t come home, they began to worry.

Harish filed a missing persons report with the local police Monday, November 18. That same evening, police received a call about a child’s body seen floating in a nearby pond. When Anmol’s parents heard the news, they rushed to the hospital, where the body was taken, and identified the dead child as their son.

“It was very clear he was brutally murdered,” reported field correspondent, Jayana. “[The murderer] had tortured the child in such an inhuman way. . .”

Evidence suggests Anmol’s neck was cut, toes were broken and hands were slashed and burned. His face was burned, as well, while hot fragments of coal or firewood were placed on Anmol’s stomach, burning his abdomen. His mouth was also found tied. Autopsy reports came back indicating Anmol’s final cause of death was drowning.

Details identifying the murderer are unconfirmed while investigations take place.

“It’s unthinkable that this would happen to a little child like this,” said K.P. Yohannan, founder and international director of Gospel for Asia. “Persecution against Christians is an ongoing matter that we see happening every week. In fact, it’s increased by 400 percent in the last several years, but the killing of a little child like this is unheard of. Our people are already there to comfort and meet the needs of the family.”

Harish with his wife, daughter, remaining son and two of his brothers. Pastor Ruben continues to minister to the family during this time.

Harish held Anmol’s funeral Tuesday, November 19. Around 200 believers gathered for the ceremony, including the local GFA pastor, Ruben.

“The wail of the people and the parents was truly heartbreaking to see,” Jayana said. “It was truly a painful and intolerable incident.”

Anmol’s family has been a main target for persecution since 2003, when Harish made the decision to live for Jesus Christ after witnessing the miraculous healing of his older brother who had been sick for a long time. Along with Harish, 45 other people came to know the saving grace of Jesus and were added to the church because of this healing. Later, Harish’s distant relatives also believed in the power of Christ through Harish’s witness. Today, Harish is considered “one of the strong believers of our church,” Jayana said.

Because of the large number of people coming to know Christ as their Savior, persecution has since broken out in this community.

Around 200 believers gathered for Anmol’s funeral.

Please pray for:

  • Comfort and peace for Anmol’s family as they grieve his death. Anmol leaves behind a father, mother, older brother and younger sister.
  • God to strengthen and protect His children from further persecution.
  • Anmol’s murderer to repent and come to know the saving and forgiving grace of the Savior.
  • Pastor Ruben as he ministers to his congregation during this time.

Matei 10 :28; 32-33

Pastor Ugyen’s Story – IDOP 2013

persecution chainsfrom – Asian Pastor Uygen, imprisoned for 3 years. Identities concealed.

Every day throughout South Asia, believers face all kinds of opposition for their faith in Jesus. National missionaries and their families are often the ones who suffer the greatest, sharing the love of Christ with those in need.

Persecution, in some regions, takes the form of imprisonment, separating families for years. This is pastor Ugyen’s story:

From 24/04/12 Little is known about the prison camps of North Korea where it is estimated that 200,000 are imprisoned. Many are born in the camps and generations of families are imprisoned because one of their relatives has been detained.

Shin Dong-Hyuk is one such case. He was born 26 years ago in Camp 14 in Pyeongan province, known as a ‘complete control district’, where the only sentence is life.

For most of his life all he knew was the camp, working 12 to 15-hour days mining coal, building dams or sewing military uniforms. If inmates were not executed they were killed in work-related accidents or died of an illness usually triggered by hunger.

But after the execution of his mother and brother, Shin Dong-Hyuk decided to try and escape. No one born into a North Korean prison camp has ever escaped before.

Shin Dong-Hyuk will be joining us at the Frontline Club with Blaine Harden whose book Escape from Camp 14; One Man’s Remarkable Odyssey from North Korea to Freedom in the West recounts his extraordinary journey.

Blaine Harden is an author and journalist who reports for PBS Frontline and contributes to The Economist. He worked for The Washington Post as a correspondent in Africa, Eastern Europe and Asia, as well as in New York and Seattle. He was also a national correspondent for The New York Times and writer for the Times Magazine.

Chaired by Charles Scanlon, Asia Pacific editor at BBC World Service and formerly BBC correspondent in Japan and South Korea from 2000 to 2007.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un observes a massive military parade commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Korean armistice. North Korea likes to impress with their military parades and show their might, yet they are very fearful of Christians and punish christianity with labor camps and imprisonment. There are an estimated 40,000 – 70,000 Christians housed in internment camps.

Channel 4 news in the United Kingdom has posted a 4 minute video of the recent military parade, with footage of the current leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, the grandson of the communist founder/dictator of North Korea – Kim Jong Il. This is some rare footage indeed, considering that North Korea is such a secretive society.

Voice of America report on this event:

PYONGYANG — North Korea on Saturday marked the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Korean War armistice with a large scale parade of soldiers and military hardware in Kim Il Sung Square.  Only a few Americans were officially invited to witness the parade.

For North Korea this is a victory celebration and a show of strength both to its own people and the rest of the world that it stands ready to fight again.  The Director General of the  political bureau of the country’s military Choe Ryong Hae, told the crowd that the country’s military and people along with the party would surely fulfill the lofty dreams of those heroes and warriors of the 1950s.

At the head of the parade were veterans mostly in their 80s and 90s, sitting in the back of open trucks.  They are considered heroes for helping to save their country in the war against the US led UN troops following North Korea’s invasion of South Korea in 1950.  Here America is blamed for starting that war.  The US, with which North Korea has no diplomatic relations is still considered the enemy.

Rows of tanks and other mobile armored weapons rolled past. all of it stenciled on  front „Let’s annihilate the US imperial aggressors, the blood enemy of the Korean people.”

Thousands of soldiers goose stepped, some wearing medals glistening in the bright sun on one of the warmest days of the year in Pyongyang.

Also on parade, large 16 wheel flatbed trucks carrying medium range ballistic missiles which army officers told VOA news are capable of hitting the US pacific state of Hawaii.

MiG jet fighters streaked by, heading north to south, and at low altitude helicopters dangled banners which read „We will protect Marshall Kim Jong Un at the cost of our lives.”

The young third generation leader did not address the crowd, but after thousands of cheering citizens paraded by shouting his name, Mr. Kim, with Chinese vice president  Li Yuanchao at his side, waved to the crowd from a shaded balcony above huge portraits of his late grandfather and father, the country’s founder and eternal president Kim Il Sung and Generalissimo Kim Jong Il.

Here are 5 examples of how to pray for the persecuted church and its people, from Ephesians:

  • Please pray persecuted believers would know the hope God gives (Ephesians 1:8).
  • Pray the Holy Spirit would strengthen them (Ephesians 3:16).
  • Please pray persecuted believers would know how much God loves them (Ephesians 3:17)
  • Pray they would know how to share the gospel (Ephesians 6:19).
  • Please pray persecuted believers would fearlessly tell others about Jesus (Ephesians 6:20). (Via CCU)

Bringing Light to the darkness

A ministry to North Koreans

From The Voice of the Martyrs Canada (One of the men in the video recalls seeing 2 young men in their twenties and a woman publicly executed for brining Bibles into North Koreea, and recalls wanting to know more about this Jesus that could prompt the government to kill it’s own people, in order to shut them up about Him):

North Korean BibleThese North Korean christians have endured hardship, and separation from family and friends. They experienced despair and hopelessness after living under an oppressive and exclusive regime, that rules with an iron fist, and that considers Christians the enemy of the state. One of the worst offenses for the government there is for someone to become a Christian and worship Christ over worshipping a state, the government and the Kim family. Leaving North Korea is considered treason. People who are caught are repatriated from China, and are often imprisoned in concentration camps, tortured, or even killed.

Considered the most dangerous place to be a follower of Jesus, North Korea consistently tops the world’s human rights watch lists as the most repressive and closed nation on earth. Reports of inhumane actions, particularly towards Christians, continue to trickle out of the country. But there is a group of exiles who have not only escaped the „Hermit Kingdom” but also desire to go back. You will meet four North Korean exiles training to take the gospel to their former homeland.

David Platt – What is worth losing everything for?

…I think about two families that we just sent out last month, one to the heart of the middle east, another to the heart of central Asia, both among extremely difficult to reach people groups and one of these husbands tells our church:

„Some of you think that we are being reckless. He’s sitting there with his wife and two young kids, going into the heart of the middle east. Some of you think we are being reckless.” He looked at our church and said, „I think we’re in far greater danger of being safe than reckless in our contemporary christianity.”

And I agree whole heartedly, we do not bow at the altar of safety in this world. We die to self, we die to sin. We risk our lives and this is what it means to follow Him. To follow Jesus is to hold loosely to the things of this world- comfort, careers, possessions, position, family, friends, safety, ourselves to cling tightly to the person of Christ and the mission of His kingdom.

Now, that may sound extreme to some, but, don’t forget who the ‘me’ is here. To leave behind, lay down and abandon everything in your life doesn’t make sense until you realize who Jesus is. But, when you realize who He is, when you realize who Christ the King is, leaving behind, laying down, abandoning everything in our lives is the only thing that makes sense. Right? This is Matthew 13:44- Jesus tells the story of a man walking in the field, stumbles upon a treasure that no one else knows is there. This guy knows, this treasure hidden in the field is worth more than everything I’ve got put together. So what does he do? He covers it back up. He goes and sells everything he has- the text says „with gladness, he sells everything he has.” People come up to him and say, „You’re crazy, what are you doing?” „Sell everything you have, I’m gonna buy that field over there.” „You’re gonna buy that field? You’r nuts”. He smiles, he’s doing this with gladness, he’s abandoning everything with gladness. Why? Why is he smiling? Because he knows he’s found something that is worth losing everything for.

Brothers and sisters, we have found evreything in this King, Someone who is worth losing everything for.
