Oamenii de ştiinţă de la NASA au publicat o hartă a tuturor vânturilor care bat pe Terra, folosind un model matematic.

Acestea sunt vânturile globale, care sunt mai mari si mai puternice decat vânturile locale. Vânturile colorate cu rosu sunt cele mai puternice vânturi de pe planeta noastra.

Aceasta simulare (un model matematic) NASA reprezinta mişcările vânturilor şi a altor fenomene atmosferice de pe Terra între mai 2005 şi mai 2007. Simularea ne arata cum ar arata atmosfera la un moment dat.

NASA Comet ISON’s Path Thru the Solar System

Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) may become one of the most dazzling in decades when it rounds the sun later this year. Like all comets, ISON is a clump of frozen gases mixed with dust. Often described as „dirty snowballs,” comets emit gas and dust whenever they venture near enough to the sun that the icy material transforms from a solid to gas, a process called sublimation. Jets powered by sublimating ice also release dust, which reflects sunlight and brightens the comet.

Based on ISON’s orbit, astronomers think the comet is making its first-ever trip through the inner solar system. Before beginning its long fall toward the sun, the comet resided in the Oort comet cloud, a vast shell of perhaps a trillion icy bodies that extends from the outer reaches of the planetary system to about a third of the distance to the star nearest the sun.

Formally designated C/2012 S1 (ISON), the comet was discovered on Sept. 21, 2012, by Russian astronomers Vitali Nevski and Artyom Novichonok using a telescope of the International Scientific Optical Network located near Kislovodsk.

The first of several intriguing observing opportunities occurs on Oct. 1, when the inbound comet passes about 6.7 million miles (10.8 million km) from Mars. During this time, the comet may be observable to NASA and ESA spacecraft now working at Mars, including the Curiosity rover.

Fifty-eight days later, on Nov. 28, ISON will make a sweltering passage around the sun. The comet will approach within about 730,000 miles (1.2 million km) of its visible surface, which classifies ISON as a sungrazing comet. In late November, its icy material will furiously sublimate and release torrents of dust as the surface erodes under the sun’s fierce heat, all as sun-monitoring satellites look on. Around this time, the comet may become bright enough to glimpse just by holding up a hand to block the sun’s glare.

Sungrazing comets often shed large fragments or even completely disrupt following close encounters with the sun, but for ISON neither fate is a forgone conclusion.

Following ISON’s solar encounter, the comet will depart the sun and move toward Earth, appearing in evening twilight through December. The comet will swing past Earth on Dec. 26, approaching within 39.9 million miles (64.2 million km) or about 167 times farther than the moon.

What type of cloud is that? This retreating cumulonimbus cloud, more commonly called a thundercloud, is somewhat unusual as it contains the unusual bumpiness of a mammatus cloud on the near end, while simultaneously producing falling rain on the far end. Taken in mid-June in southern Alberta, Canada, the cloud is moving to the east, into the distance, as the sun sets in the west, behind the camera. In the above image, graphic sunset colors cross the sky to give the already photogenic cloud striking orange and pink hues. A darkening blue sky covers the background. Further in the distance, a rising, waxing, gibbous moon is visible on the far right.

Enjoy a summer evening of sky watching! The annual Perseid meteor shower peaks on the night of Aug. 11-12. Rates can get as high as 100 per hour, with many fireballs visible in the night sky. Early in the evening, a waxing crescent moon will interfere slightly with this year’s show, but it will have set by the time of the best viewing, just before dawn. The best opportunity to see Perseids is during the dark, pre-dawn hours of Aug. 12.

On the night of Aug. 10-11 – the night before the shower’s peak – join NASA in a live Web chat to watch the Perseids. NASA astronomer Bill Cooke and Danielle Moser and Rhiannon Blaauw from the NASA Meteoroid Environment Office at Marshall Space Flight Center will answer your questions. How to See Perseid Meteors
For optimal viewing, find an open sky  because Perseid meteors come across the sky from all directions. Lie on the ground and look straight up into the dark sky. Again, it is important to be far away from artificial lights. Your eyes can take up to 30 minutes to adjust to the darkness, so allow plenty of time for your eyes to dark-adapt.

About the Perseids
The Perseids have been observed for at least 2,000 years and are associated with the comet Swift-Tuttle, which orbits the sun once every 133 years. Each year in August, the Earth passes through a cloud of the comet’s debris. These bits of ice and dust – most over 1,000 years old – burn up in the Earth’s atmosphere to create one of the best meteor showers of the year. The Perseids can be seen all over the sky, but the best viewing opportunities will be across the northern hemisphere. Those with sharp eyes will see that the meteors radiate from the direction of the constellation Perseus.

The origin of the universe’s gold is mysterious, since it’s not formed within stars like lighter elements such as carbon and iron. But the mystery may now be solved, as a new study posits that the collision of two neutron stars — the tiny, incredibly dense cores of exploded stars — could catalyze the creation of the valuable metal.

„We estimate that the amount of gold produced and ejected during the merger of the two neutron stars may be as large as 10 moon masses — quite a lot of bling!” lead author Edo Berger, of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), said in a statement. „To paraphrase Carl Sagan, we are all star stuff, and our jewelry is colliding-star stuff.” [Two Neutron Stars Collide (Video)]

Berger and his colleagues studied a short gamma-ray burst — a class of explosions that are among the most luminous known in the universe — spotted by NASA’s Earth-orbiting Swift spacecraft in early June.

Called GRB 130603B, the gamma-ray burst was located about 3.9 billion light-years from Earth and lasted for less than two-tenths of a second. In the aftermath of the burst, scientists noticed that the explosion gave way to a gradually fading glow dominated by infrared light.

The research team thinks the burst’s glow comes from „exotic radioactive elements,” which can be spawned by the neutron-rich material thrown out into the universe by colliding neutron stars.

„We’ve been looking for a ‘smoking gun’ to link a short gamma-ray burst with a neutron star collision,” co-author Wen-fai Fong, a CfA graduate student, said in a statement. „The radioactive glow from GRB 130603B may be that smoking gun.”

Gold is rare on Earth because it’s rare in the universe. In all, the team expects that the gamma-ray burst ejected about one one-hundredth of a solar mass of material, with some of it being gold.

„By combining the estimated gold produced by a single short GRB with the number of such explosions that have occurred over the age of the universe, all the gold in the cosmos might have come from gamma-ray bursts,” CfA officials wrote in a press release July 17.

The new study has been submitted to the journal Astrophysical Journal Letters. Berger presented the results today during a press conference at the CfA in Cambridge, Mass.

ROMANIAN – Originea aurului din Univers este enigmatică, de vreme ce el nu se formează în stele obişnuite, precum elementele mai uşoare, ca fierul şi carbonul. Un studiu recent propune o ipoteză explicativă: întrega cantitate de aur existentă pe Terra îşi are originea în coliziunile nucleelor superdense ale unor stele moarte.

Ciocnirile unor stele neutronice – nucleele extrem de dense ale unor stele care au explodat – ar putea cataliza formarea metalului preţios.

„Cantitatea de aur produsă şi expulzată în timpul contopirii a două stele neutronice ar putea fi de 10 ori cât masa Lunii”, estimează Edo Berger, de la Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), conducătorul studiului.

Cercetătorii au studiat o explozie de raze gamma – un tip de explozie care se numără printre cele mai „strălucitoare” din Univers, deoarece emite o cantitate enormă de radiaţii -, observată de sonda orbitală Swift a NASA în luna iunie a acestui an.

Explozia de raze gamma, numitpă GRB 130603B, este localizată la cca. 3,9 miliarde de ani-lumină de Pământ şi a durat mai puţin de două zecimi de secundă. După eveniment, cercetătorii au observat că explozia a dat naştere unei luminozităţi care scădea treptat în intensitate şi era dominată de lumina infraroşie.

Specialiştii cred că această strălucire luminoasă provine de la „elemente radioactive exotice”, care s-ar fi putut forma din materia bogată în neutroni împrăştiată în Univers prin coliziuniea a două stele neutronice.

Aurul est rar pe Pământ deoarece este rar în Univers, în general. În ansamblu, cercetătorii estimează că impactul stelelor ar fi expulzat o cantitate de materie egală cu aproximativ o zecime din masa Soarelui, din care o parte ar putea fi aur.

Combinând estimările cantităţii de aur produse într-o singură explozie de raze gamma cu numărul de astfel de explozii care au avut loc de-a lungul existenţei Universului, se poate conchide că tot aurul din Univers ar putea proveni din astfel de explozii de raze gamma, cred cercetătorii.

ROMANIAN – SuperLuna, fenomen astronomic care are loc la fiecare 14 luni, în timpul căruia satelitul natural al planetei noastre se află în faza de Lună plină şi va apărea mai mare şi mai strălucitor decât în oricare altă noapte din 2013, va avea loc în acest weekend, pe 23 iunie. Pe 23 iunie, Luna va apărea mai mare şi mai strălucitoare ca de obicei şi se va afla la cea mai mică distanţă faţă de Terra din întregul an – 356.991 de kilometri.

În timpul fenomenului de SuperLună, Pământul, Soarele şi Luna sunt aliniate – Terra aflându-se între Lună şi Soare. Forţele gravitaţionale exercitate pe Terra de Lună şi Soare determină creşterea şi scăderea mareelor, fapt care i-a determinat pe „alarmişti” să creadă că există o legătură între SuperLună şi calamităţile naturale. Potrivit NASA, mareele din timpul fenomenului de SuperLună sunt doar cu câţiva centimetri mai înalte decât cele produse în nopţile obişnuite. În 2013 au mai fost deja câteva SuperLuni, însă niciuna dintre ele nu s-a produs în timpul fazei de Lună plină.  Photo via www.scientificamerican.com. A so-called supermoon will rise in the east at sunset on Saturday. A supermoon occurs when the moon is slightly closer to Earth than it typically is, and the effect is most noticeable when it occurs at the same time as a full moon, according to James Garvin, chief scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. This full moon is not only the closest and largest full moon of the year, according to astronomy website EarthSky. It’s also the moon’s closest encounter with Earth in all of 2013. So it’s not just a supermoon — it’s the closest supermoon of the half-dozen or so that will occur this year, EarthSky reports.

The word supermoon was coined in 1979 by astrologer Richard Nolle, says AccuWeather’s Mark Paquette. Nolle used the term to describe a new or full moon that occurs when the moon is at or near its closest approach to Earth. The moon will pass within about 221,000 miles from the Earth on Saturday night, compared with its „typical” distance of about 238,000 miles. Garvin says the moon may seem bigger, although the difference in its distance from Earth is only a few percent. For instance, the moon on Saturday night will appear 12% to 14% larger than it will next month.

The moon’s effect on ocean tides is higher during a supermoon than any other time, so expect higher and lower tides than usual, reports Sean Breslin of the Weather Channel. (The high tide this weekend is also known as a „king” tide.) There is no connection between the supermoon and earthquakes, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

„If you’re looking for a more thrilling lunar event, a larger supermoon is expected on Sept. 28, 2015, and the largest supermoon until 2034 will occur on Nov. 14, 2016,” Breslin says. The Desert Southwest and the lower Ohio Valley into the mid-Atlantic and southern New England will have the clearest skies for viewing the supermoon, according to a forecast from AccuWeather.

The Upper Midwest will have the poorest conditions, since rain and thunderstorms are forecast across that region overnight, AccuWeather reports. Showers will also affect part of the Northwest and pockets of the Plains and Deep South, but will die out as the night goes on. ENGLISH – Just to give you an idea as to how incredibly huge our universe is, did you know it takes planet Saturn 30 years to make one single full orbit around the sun?

This narrated video below is about a hurricane-like storm seen at Saturn’s north pole by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft. Cassini has been in orbit around Saturn for 9 years and we’ve been following this hexagon which surrounds the north pole.

It’s bigger than 2 Earths, and it’s a wandering jet stream. But it’s been winter in the north. So we have not been able to see what’s at the center of the hexagon. But now it’s spring. And what we’ve found at the center of the hexagon is a Saturn hurricane. This is a view from directly over the north pole, which is made possible by the orbit of the spacecraft which is now taking us over the pole. The winds are flowing at 300 miles an hour, which is 4 times hurricane force. The fluffy white clouds in the center are about the size of Texas. We can use special filters to measure the heights of the clouds. The red are low clouds and the green are high clouds.

We call it a Saturn hurricane because it has the eye, it has the high winds, but it’s different from an Earth hurricane because it’s locked to the north pole. And unlike a terrestrial hurricane there’s no ocean underneath.

ROMANIAN – Ca sa va dati seama ce mare este universul nostru, a-ti stiut ca Saturn are nevoie de 30 de ani pentru a realiza un ciclu complet în jurul Soarelui?

In Video – Uragan fara ocean/apa: NASA îi spune „Trandafirul”, însă în ciuda numelui ce inspiră delicateţe este vorba despre o furtună de mari proporţii ce a avut loc la polul nord de pe Saturn. „Ochiul” furtunii are un diametru de peste 2.011 kilometri, de 20 de ori mai mare decât un „ochi” al unui uragan de pe Pământ. Vântul din ochiul acestei furtuni are şi el o viteză de patru ori mai mare decât cel de pe Terra.

Uimitoarea imagine ce surprinde vârtejul a fost colorată pentru ca privitorii să poată deosebi cu uşurinţă norii de la altitudine mică (coloraţi în roşu) de cei de la altitudine mare (coloraţi cu verde). Specialiştii NASA au estimat că norii aflaţi pe marginea vârtejului circulă cu o viteză de 531 km/h. „Uraganul se învârte în interiorul unui model meteo mare şi misterios, cu şase laturi, cunoscut sub numele de hexagon”, susţine NASA. Analiza realizată de Agenţie relevă că furtuna, aflându-se la poli şi neavând unde să se deplaseze,  se învârtea probabil în acelaşi loc de mulţi ani.

Imaginea a fost realiză de Cassini în încercarea de a surprinde polul nord al lui Saturn cât mai bine. Trecând de echinocţiu în 2009, polul este acum scăldat de lumina Soarelui. Din cauză că Saturn are nevoie de 30 de ani pentru a realiza un ciclu complet în jurul Soarelui, echinocţiul are loc odată la 15 ani. I can watch a hundred of these videos and never lose my awe for the breathtaking views of the earth. And it always reminds me of breathtaking Scriptures. Today it reminds me of Jeremiah 32:17:

Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.”

All Time-lapse sequences were taken by the astronaunts onboard the International Space Station (ISS) (Thanks guys for making this available to the public for use!) All footage has been color graded, denoised, deflickered, slowed down and stabilized by myself. Clips were then complied and converted to 1080 HD at 24 frames/sec.

Some interesting tidbits about the ISS. It orbits the planet about once every 90 mins and is about 350 Km/217 miles. The yellow/greenish line that you see over the earth is Airgolw.

Agenţia spaţială americană NASA a publicat o carte de excepţie, cu fotografii ale celor mai inedite puncte ale Terrei, văzute din spaţiu, pe care o oferă gratuit, în format electronic.

Foto: NASA„Această carte celebrează frumuseţea Pământului, manifestată în tiparele, formele, culorile şi texturile pământului, ale oceanelor, gheţurilor şi atmosferei,” anunţă NASA în descrierea cărţii care cuprinde 75 de imagini uluitoare realizate cu ajutorul sateliţilor Terra, Landsat 5, Landsat 7, EO-1 şi Aqua.

Datorită senzorilor cu care sunt dotaţi aceşti sateliţi, imaginile arată mai mult decât se poate vedea cu ochiul liber. Ele au fost realizate „mai degrabă pentru a satisface privirea observatorului decât pentru interpretarea lor ştiinţifică”, spun reprezentanţii NASA.

Cartea poate fi descărcată gratuit, în două variante: Earth As Art (format .pdf) şi Earth As Art (aplicaţie de iPad).

When man first saw planet earth – Astronauts Describe The ‘Overview Effect’ That Transformed Their Minds

Experts say ‘Solar Max’ is due in the year 2013. When it arrives the peak of its 11 year sun spot cycle will bring more solar flares, more coronal mass ejections, more geomagnetic storms and more auroras than we have experienced in quite some time.  On the weekend of July 14, 2012 skywatchers around the world got a taste of things to come. It was mid Saturday in North America when a coronal mass ejection or CME crashed into earth’s magnetic field and triggered the most sustained display of auroras in years. For more than 36 hours, magnetic storms circled earth’s poles, northern lights spilled across the Canadian border to the United States as far south as California, Colorado, Kansas and Arkansas. In the SOuthern hemisphere skies turned red in Tasmania and New Zealand, while the aurora australis pirouetted around the South Pole. The northern lights, one of several astronomical phenomena called polar lights (aurora polaris), are shafts or curtains of colored light visible on occasion in the night sky.

Polar lights (aurora polaris) are a natural phenomenon found in both the northern and southern hemispheres that can be truly awe inspiring. Northern lights are also called by their scientific name,aurora borealis, and southern lights are called aurora australis.

Sten Odenwald, author of The 23rd cycle, learning to live with a stormy star (New York, Columbia University Press, c2001), provides insight to how northern lights are formed:

The origin of the aurora begins on the surface of the sun when solar activity ejects a cloud of gas. Scientists call this a coronal mass ejection (CME). If one of these reaches earth, taking about 2 to 3 days, it collides with the Earth’s magnetic field. This field is invisible, and if you could see its shape, it would make Earth look like a comet with a long magnetic ‘tail’ stretching a million miles behind Earth in the opposite direction of the sun.

When a coronal mass ejection collides with the magnetic field, it causes complex changes to happen to the magnetic tail region. These changes generate currents of charged particles, which then flow along lines of magnetic force into the Polar Regions. These particles are boosted in energy in Earth’s upper atmosphere, and when they collide with oxygen and nitrogen atoms, they produce dazzling auroral light.

Odenwald further tells us „Aurora are beautiful, but the invisible flows of particles and magnetism that go on at the same time can damage our electrical power grid and satellites operating in space. This is why scientists are so keen to understand the physics of aurora and solar storms, so we can predict when our technologies may be affected.”

Can I see them anywhere?
Yes. Although more frequent at higher latitudes, closer to the poles (such as in Canada, Alaska, Antarctica), they have been seen closer to the equator as far south as Mexico. To view them, look in the direction of the closest pole (the northern horizon in the northern hemisphere, the southern horizon in the southern hemisphere).

Can I see them at any time of the year?
Yes. In some areas, such as Alaska or Greenland, they may be visible most nights of the year. And they occur at any time of the day, but we can’t see them with the naked eye unless it’s dark.

What causes the colors and patterns?
Colors and patterns are from the types of ions or atoms being energized as they collide with the atmosphere and are affected by lines of magnetic force. Displays may take many forms, including rippling curtains, pulsating globs, traveling pulses, or steady glows. Altitude affects the colors. Blue violet/reds occur below 60 miles (100 km), with bright green strongest between 60-150 miles (100-240 km). Above 150 miles (240 km) ruby reds appear.

Fun Facts about northern lights:

  • According to Neil Bone (The aurora: sun-earth interactions, 1996), the term aurora borealis–northern dawn–is jointly credited to have first been used by Pierre Gassendi (1592-1655) and Galileo Galilei (1564-1642), who both witnessed a light display on Sept. 12, 1621. However, Bone also includes a description of the northern lights made 1,000 years prior by Gregory of Tours (538-594.) It included the phrase, „… so bright that you might have thought that day was about to dawn.”
  • Auroras have been observed since ancient times.
  • The height of the displays can occur up to 1000 km (620 miles), although most are between 80-120 km.
  • Auroras tend to be more frequent and spectacular during high solar sunspot activity, which cycles over approximately eleven years.
  • Some displays are particularly spectacular and widespread and have been highlighted in news accounts. Examples include auroral storms of August-September, 1859, Feb 11, 1958, (lights 1250 miles wide circled the Arctic from Oregon to New Hampshire) and March 13, 1989, (the whole sky turned a vivid red and the aurora was seen in Europe and North America as far south as Cuba).
  • Legends abound in northern cultures to explain the northern lights. Some North American Inuit call the aurora aqsarniit(“football players”) and say the spirits of the dead are playing football with the head of a walrus. Often legends warn children that the lights might come down and snatch them away.
  • June 1896, Norwegian Kristian Birkeland, the “father of modern auroral science,” suggested the theory that electrons from sunspots triggered auroras.
  • Yellowknife (Northwest Territories, Canada) is the capital for aurora tourism.
  • The earliest known account of northern lights appears to be from a Babylonian clay tablet from observations made by the official astronomers of King Nebuchadnezzar II, 568/567 BC.
  • Some people claim to hear noises associated with the northern lights, but documenting this phenomenon has been difficult.

English: What’s Up for June? It won’t happen again until December 2117. On June 5th, 2012, Venus will transit(pass in front of) the face of the sun in an event of both historical and observational importance. First video shows Venus’ transit and the second video explains it.
Launched on Feb. 11, 2010, the Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, is the most advanced spacecraft ever designed to study the sun. During its five-year mission, it will examine the sun’s atmosphere, magnetic field and also provide a better understanding of the role the sun plays in Earth’s atmospheric chemistry and climate. SDO provides images with resolution 8 times better than high-definition television and returns more than a terabyte of data each day.On June 5 2012, SDO collected images of the rarest predictable solar event–the transit of Venus across the face of the sun. This event lasted approximately 6 hours and happens in pairs eight years apart, which are separated from each other by 105 or 121 years. The last transit was in 2004 and the next will not happen until 2117.The videos and images displayed here are constructed from several wavelengths of extreme ultraviolet light and a portion of the visible spectrum. The red colored sun is the 304 angstrom ultraviolet, the golden colored sun is 171 angstrom, the magenta sun is 1700 angstrom, and the orange sun is filtered visible light. 304 and 171 show the atmosphere of the sun, which does not appear in the visible part of the spectrum.

In Awe of Creation – NASA | Massive Solar Flare March 6th – Eruptie Solara

Un exemplu de „semne in cer….”

This movie of the March 6, 2012 X5.4 flare was captured by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) in the 171 and 131 Angstrom wavelength. One of the most dramatic features is the way the entire surface of the sun seems to ripple with the force of the eruption. This movement comes from something called EIT waves – because they were first discovered with the Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) on the Solar Heliospheric Observatory. Since SDO captures images every 12 seconds, it has been able to map the full evolution of these waves and confirm that they can travel across the full breadth of the sun. The waves move at over a million miles per hour, zipping from one side of the sun to the other in about an hour. The movie shows two distinct waves. The first seems to spread in all directions; the second is narrower, moving toward the southeast. Such waves are associated with, and perhaps trigger, fast coronal mass ejections, so it is likely that each one is connected to one of the two CMEs that erupted on March 6.
