Joseph: Jacob’s Family Disintegrates – John Lennox

Jacob was the patriarch of Israel, but he wasn’t always a good parent. In fact, his preference for his wife Rachel led him to love Joseph more than all his other sons. Because of Jacob’s favoritism, the sons ultimately turned on Joseph. Here, John Lennox discusses the dissolution of Jacob’s family, particularly through the lens of his troubled and less-favored son, Reuben.

Joseph: The Training, Testing and Rise of the Rejected Son – John Lennox

Because of Jacob’s unfairness and his brothers’ deceit, Joseph eventually found himself trapped in Egypt as a slave. However, Joseph’s work ethic eventually led to his rise to power – even though he was seriously tempted to abandon his integrity along the way. John Lennox shows how we can learn from Joseph’s trials to show the same integrity, perseverance, and fortitude in our own lives.

Joseph: In the Context of the Big Story of Genesis – John Lennox

This session puts Joseph’s life in the context of the story of Genesis. The book of Genesis begins with the creation of the universe and ends with Joseph’s family, the young nation of Israel, settling in Egypt. How does the life of Joseph fit into such a sprawling story? John Lennox investigates.

Abraham’s Triumph – John Lennox

John Lennox concludes his series on the life of Abraham with a discussion of Abraham’s ultimate test – his near-sacrifice of Isaac on Mount Moriah. This challenging text is one of the most discussed – and most criticized – passages in the entire Old Testament. John Lennox sheds light on this story and discusses its importance and relevance for Christian faith today.

Abraham’s Journey – John Lennox

John Lennox explores the early, difficult stages of Abraham’s journey. Even though God oversaw his journey, Abraham still wrestled with his own sin and myriad external temptations and trials. Abraham and Sarah faced famine and hardship, and Abraham even sinned against his wife and failed her as a husband. Just as Abraham had to learn what it meant to live as a father, husband, and faithful follower of God, today’s Christians have to learn the same lessons in their journey with God.

Abraham’s Call – John Lennox

In this first session, John Lennox introduces us to the monumental Old Testament figure of Abraham: the man whom God called out of his tribe to live as a pilgrim, sojourn as a stranger, and – ultimately – to become the father of God’s chosen nation. Because of his faith, God made Abraham an „heir according to the promise” – and Christians become heirs as well when they put their trust in the God of Abraham.

Daniel 6-12: Power and Truth – John Lennox

In the second half of Daniel, we see kingdoms run by the rule of law and yet suffering from spiritual lawlessness. Depicted as animals, the kingdoms dehumanize the powerless and deify the powerful. How are we arming ourselves today not to fall for the deception of the powerful in the world? We are throwing away the only offensive weapon we have, Scripture. This talk challenges us to arm ourselves with Truth as we wait for the perfect Man to return and destroy the beast.

Daniel 3-5: Revelation and Reason – John Lennox

Are you using your talents and trusting God or using God and trusting your own talents? Unlike the two emperors Nebuchadnezzar and Belshazzar, Daniel used reason and revelation to maintain an eternal perspective and a humble belief in God even in cruel situations. Like Daniel, we may face grim things, but the one who has ultimate authority and has written the law has given us gifts to obey and is prepared to forgive us and welcome us into His kingdom.

Daniel 1-2: Identity and Integrity – John Lennox

As Nebuchadnezzar ruled the Babylonian empire, Daniel and his colleagues were commanded to have new names, a new language, and new laws. Because Daniel accepted his identity in God and trusted in a power greater than his own, he stood firm despite the changes around him. While Nebuchadnezzar’s power was shaken, Daniel remained a member of the stone kingdom, with God as the unshakable foundation. We can be members of the stone kingdom too, holding firm as we look toward an uncertain future.

Daniel: Standing Strong for God in a Secular Society – John Lennox

Daniel must rate as one of the most remarkable leaders in all of history. He ran two successive empires, and to him was entrusted enormous power. Despite this power, Daniel not only maintained his faith and devotion to God, but he also maintained his public witness to God. This book presents us with a cultural and worldview situation that is very close to our own. So often under the pressures of contemporary secular society, faith is privatized, but through Daniel we can learn to stand up and be counted in secular society.
