„Kumar and his wife met their son at the welfare home on Monday. “He was wearing the same clothes and undergarments in which he had gone to school a week ago. He is not receiving proper care from the child welfare department. He hugged us and cried a lot… he is our only child…why would we torture him,” he said.

“He is an active child, and is very fussy about eating… He likes to eat Indian food… he is being given bread and porridge, and has not been eating well,” he said. “I have never even raised my voice at him, how can I beat him up? His mother spent sleepless nights taking care of him as he is an asthma patient. How can we physically hurt our beloved son,” said Kumar.

“We are very disturbed. His 80-year-old grandfather is a heart patient and has not eaten properly… We are very scared. We are not able to concentrate on anything. They have snatched away our son from us. We can´t live without him. We are shattered. We are crying day and night,” he said.”

Latest Norway Child Snatching Case

A group of eminent public figures, lawyers, academics and child psychologists have written to the Indian Foreign Minister regarding the latest case of a five year old child confiscated from his family by Norwegian authorities. The appeal for intervention says that:
• Norwegian child protection authorities have come in for criticism globally for incompetence, administrative highhandedness, cultural prejudice and racism.
• Time and again the allegations of the Norwegian authorities about the parents have turned out to be either distortions or outright falsehoods.
• Norwegians themselves have been protesting in the hundreds against wrongful child snatching by Barnevernet.
• The Government of India should device a policy for the protection of children caught up in such situations overseas. In keeping with the right under international law of children to maintain their filial and cultural ties, where the child has relatives in India, there should be a mechanism for repatriating the child to its relatives here.

Re: Wrongful snatching of 5 year old Indian boy from his family by Norwegian authorities

Dear Madam,
We have seen in newspaper reports that yet another Indian child has been cruelly snatched from his parents, Mr Anil Kumar and Ms Gurvinderjit Kaur, by authorities in Norway (Indian Express report of Shubhajit Roy…/nri-parents-protest-as-norway-t…/, Times of India…/articlesh…/56112341.cms ).
We denounce this repeated abuse of Indian origin families in Norway.
This is the fifth such case to our knowledge involving an Indian family in Norway since 2011. There may be many more which have not come to our notice. Time and again the allegations of the Norwegian authorities about the parents have turned out to be either distortions or outright falsehoods, and children once returned to their families have been doing very well, showing that their removal was both cruel and unwarranted.
Norwegian child protection authorities have come in for criticism globally for snatching children from families based on wrong assessments of abuse by the parents. Most of the cases are of foreigners working in Norway.
Barnevernet, the Norwegian child protection authority, has been criticised in the United States of America, Russia, Australia, Brazil, Romania, Czechia, Lithuania and India, among other countries, of incompetence, administrative highhandedness, cultural prejudice and racism.
This year alone there have been protests every month in Norway against wrongful child snatching by Barnevernet in which hundreds of locals and immigrants have participated. This has been covered in the international press, including by BBC World, Deutche Welle and RT.
Children taken into Norwegian state care are often mistreated, neglected and there have been cases of their being subjected to sexual abuse. In the current case, the parents have reported that their son is not being properly cared for in state care. When they visited him for the first time this Monday since he was taken, their son was wearing the same clothes and undergarments in which he had gone to school a week ago, from where he was taken by the authorities without any notice to the parents. He is also not been able to eat well as he is accustomed to Indian food.
The child is merely 5 years of age and greatly traumatised by the enforced separation from his parents. Video records of his interrogation by Norwegian authorities reportedly show him denying being beaten at home and there is a strong suggestion of leading questions having been asked.
We urge you to spare no efforts in ensuring that the boy is reunited with his family and placed with persons known to him and his language and eating habits in the interim.
It is also time for the Government of India to device a policy for the protection of children caught up in such situations overseas. The right of children to maintain their filial and cultural ties is well recognised in international law. Where the child has relatives in India, there should be a mechanism for repatriating him to his relatives here, if his family is willing. This will minimise the trauma of small children being placed in an institution or with strangers who are unaware of their language, eating habits and other aspects of their care and comfort.

Yours sincerely,

WHERE:                  Exact location, name of place, and exact address

WHY:                       Romanian-Americans are outraged at the news and reports of events that unfolded in Norway over the last four months related to the Bodnariu family’s case; confiscation of all their 5 children by Norway’s Barnevernet (Norway’s Child Protection Services). As such, tens of thousands of Romanian-Americans from U.S. and Canada will peacefully demonstrate to show solidarity with the Bodnariu Family who lost custody of all 5 of their children through a process that goes against international laws, conventions, and protected human rights. The demonstrators will voice opposition to Norway’s Barnevernet and its inhumane Nazi-like tactics.

WHY IN USA:       Marius Bodnariu, father of the 5 children (a Romanian citizen living in Norway married to Ruth – a Norwegian), has most of his family living in United States as naturalized U.S. citizens; both of Marius’ parents, along with a married sister, live in the Atlanta-Georgia, two other married sisters live in the Chicago-Illinois metropolitan area, and another married sister lives in the Portland-Oregon area.

Thousands of Romanian-Americans (community and religious leaders, businessmen and civic leaders) have informed the organizers of their participation to this peaceful protest taking place on April 16, 2016. These peaceful protests will take place in: Atlanta (Georgia), Chicago (Illinois), Cleveland (Ohio), Dallas (Texas), Detroit (Michigan), Honolulu (Hawaii), Houston (Texas), Los Angeles (California), Miami (Florida), New York (New York), Phoenix (Arizona), Portland (Oregon), Sacramento (California), Saint Louis (Missouri), Seattle (Washington), and in Canada (Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Alberta, Vancouver BC).

Diplomatic efforts with U.S. dignitaries, officials, and governmental departments have been initiated, fostered, and continue to expand as this case has gained interest and support from all those involved.

PETITION:              On November 19, 2015, Romanian-American pastor Cristian Ionescu of Chicago launched an online petition in support of the reunification of the Bodnariu family:

This petition gathered over 10,000 signatures in less than 48 hours, more than 25,000 signatures in less than two weeks, and continues to gain attention and signers. The petition has nearly 60,000 signatures at the time of this press release.

WHO ELSE:            There are 38 families that have co-signed an appeal for international attention from the leaders of the European Union to the abuses perpetrated by Norway’s Barnevernet and intervention in their respective cases of abduction of their children in Norway.

Our utter desperation forced us to address you by this letter. It forced us to write you about the reality of unspeakable abuse of power being committed by a supposedly advanced country even as we speak. The country in question is Kingdom of Norway. We are addressing you, because Norway is systematically acting in breach of its legal obligations also against European citizens and their families, causing them great harm. The fact that Norway is not an EU Member State cannot be seen as an excuse this time; quite opposite. It should be the reason for the Community institutions to step in and defend their citizens.
