From the Russian/Asian front. Mission News Network reports:

Kazachs consider evangelist worse than spies for bringing Kazakhs to Christ.

SGA serves Bible-preaching churches in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States by helping national pastors and churches reach their own people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. „There definitely has been an uptick in the level and intensity of persecution in these countries,” says Griffith.

„The worst persecution believers get would be in Turkmenistan andUzbekistan, but it certainly has been stepping up in Kazakhstan.” (Photo credit http://voiceofthepersecuted.wordpress.com)

Persecution Personified

Earlier this year, Pastor Bakhytzhan Kashkumbayev was imprisoned as part of a nationwide crack-down. He’s been arrested on trumped-up charges, denied medical attention, and imprisoned in a psychiatric asylum. Now, according to International Christian Concern (ICC), Kazakh officials are harassing members of Kashkumbaev’s Grace Protestant Church.

„You are worse than spies. You bring Kazakhs to Christ,” an officer reportedly told one of ICC’s sources.

In Eastern Kazakhstan, Baptist Pastor Pavel Leonov is facing up to a year in prison for refusing to pay a fine equal to two months’ income, according to Forum 18 News. Leonov is part of the Council of Churches Baptist, a group which refuses to register their fellowships with the government.

SGA works with churches of the Union of Evangelical Christians Baptist (UECB), a group registered with Kazakhstan’s government. But that doesn’t mean they don’t run into problems, Griffith notes. „They try to comply with registration laws,” he says. „They try to follow the law as closely as they can, and they still end up getting persecuted anyway.”

The Silver Lining

Though persecution is on the rise, it isn’t stopping believers in Central Asia from sharing their faith. „The churches remember what life was like under Communism,” Griffith states. „They know what it is to live and serve under persecution, and they’re certainly not going to stop proclaiming the Gospel because this seems to be stepping up again.”

Keep praying for persecuted Christians around the world. Pray specifically for believers in Central Asia. „Pray for these pastors who are encountering difficulty right now,” adds Griffith.

„For some reason, it just doesn’t seem to grab the attention of the news media, and it needs to,” says Griffith. „I mean, these are people that are actually being killed for their faith.”

Men posing as Jesus will try to deceive people in the last days – here’s one in Siberia,Russia

Since the 19th century, it has been documented that men have been posing as Christ… and doing their own missionary work, in fields the church of Jesus Christ has not reached.

Men posing as Jesus will try to deceive people in the last days.
It’s in the Bible, Matthew 24:23-24.

„At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There He is!’ do not believe it. For false Christ’s and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect—if that were possible.”

I came across this 13 minute documentary, while researching something completely different. I do not like to waste my time watching/reading about people making outlandish claims, or about false prophets, nor studying other cults built on falsehoods and strange religions, as there is so much kingdom work that Jesus has called us to, such as preaching the Gospel to all the nations. But, I decided to watch this short clip because of my ties with Romania, and  because of the ties, we as peoples of all of the former communist countries have to theses countries, and we are all especially watching the consequences of the dark communist age, and the rebuilding of those countries, after the fall of communism that swept eastern Europe in the 1980’s and 1990’s.  When it comes to religion, esp. faith in Christ, the similarities of the transition that followed the fall of communism are not surprising. As one man, interviewed in the video, says that after communism fell and all these religions invaded Russia, it was so hard to pick which one to follow. And so, this video brings to light a commmunity of 20,000 people, who pick what they like in this Vissarion, and they choose to follow this man blindly, just on his word, when he says that he is Jesus Christ returned to earth. This is mind boggling! As they are searching for God, they are not investigating if there is any truth claim to this man, as Paul had said in Romans 1:18-22:

God’s Wrath on Unrighteousness

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools,

How can his followers accept his lifestyle? How can sane adults concur with the life of their leader, when you read below that this Vissarion rejected his first wife and took another girl to live with him, at the age of 7. This is in the realm of the demonic. Yet, 20,000 people follow this 53 year old man and worship him.

Here is an excerpt from wikipedia on this false prophet and blasphemer:

On August 18, 1990, when he was 29, Vissarion claims that he had a revelation that he was the reincarnation of Christ. His religion combines elements of the Russian Orthodox Church with Buddhism, apocalypticism, collectivism, and ecological values. His followers observe strict regulations, are vegans, and are allowed no vices such as smoking or drinking alcohol and money is banned. The aim of the group is to unite all religions on Earth. Vissarion formed his religion around the time of the fall of the USSR, not by coincidence but because religion became an accepted way of life. In October 1995, the religious association of Vissarion officially registered as the „Church of the Last Testament”. Vissarion has two wives, and six children from two marriages. He rejected his first wife and married a nineteen year-old girl, who had lived with Vissarion since the age of seven. (Source http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vissarion)

This documentary, produced by Journeyman Pictures, features Sergey Anatolyevitch Torop, who calls himself Vissarion. Please forgive me for not posting the video here, but, I have no wish to promote something so blasphemous. The point of this post is to remind us that the mission field is ripe not only in Africa, and India, although the fields there are indeed more populous. But, for those of us with ties to Eastern Europe and Russia, the field is very much open for people with a hunger for God, and in the meanwhile they are fulfilling it in the wrong places with very false and dangerous prophets.

By the way, if you go to wikipedia, you will see a surprisingly big list, listing dozens of men who claimed to be Jesus, going back to the 19th century.

Russia: Sharing the Gospel in the Dangerous Islamic South

PHOTO via www.barenakedislam.com
Islam in Russia – Islam is the second most widely professed religion in the Russian Federation. Islam is considered as one of Russia’s traditional religions, legally a part of Russian historical heritage. According to a poll by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center, 6% of respondents considered themselves Muslims. According to Reuters, Muslim minorities make up a seventh (14%) of Russia’s population. Muslims constitute the nationalities in the North Caucasus residing between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea: Adyghe,Balkars, Chechens, Ingush, Kabardin, Karachay, and numerous Dagestani peoples. Also, in the middle of the Volga Basin reside populations of Tatars and Bashkirs, the vast majority of whom are Muslims. There are over 5,000 registered religious Muslim organizations (divided into Sunni, Shia and Sufi groups), which is over one sixth of the number of registered Russian Orthodox religious organizations of about 29,268 (As of December 2006) (Wikipedia)

Chechnya, Dagestan, and North Caucasus are places most people have probably never heard of before April’s Boston Marathon bombings. The two brothers suspected of carrying out the attacks lived in this violent area of Russia before moving to the United States. It’s in these dangerous places where a handful of Christians are sharing the Gospel at great risk to themselves and their families and bringing the hope of Christ to these violent regions.

Ploaie de Meteoriti in Rusia – Meteorite hits Russia (video)

PHOTO- Meteor explodes in the sky over Chelyabinsk, Russia (Image from dashboard camera, credit unknown)

CHELYABINSK, Russia, February 15, 2013 (ENS) – An asteroid several meters in diameter exploded in the atmosphere above the city of Chelyabinsk today at about 9:30 in the morning local time, injuring hundreds of people and damaging thousands of buildings, said officials.

Videos of the event taken on dashboard camera, such as the four images below, show an object streaking across a clear, blue sky and bursting into fireballs with loud explosions. Trails of vapor were visible for hundreds of miles.

As of late afternoon, around 1,200 people had been reported hurt, including more than 200 children, mostly in the Chelyabinsk Region, the Interior Ministry told the RIA Novasti news agency.

Two people are reported to be in “grave” condition, but most of those hurt had suffered minor cuts from broken glass as the shockwaves from the meteorite shattered windows in Chelyabinsk, a city of 1.1 million residents south of the Ural Mountains in south-central Russia.

President Vladimir Putin ordered emergency officials to provide “immediate” assistance to people affected by the meteorite.

Environment News Service (http://s.tt/1zQrD)

Russia: Dagestan’s Secret Christian Believers Fight a Spiritual War

Map of DagestanFrom Voice of the Martyrs –

While radical Russian Muslims are fighting to take over Dagestan for Islam there are secret Christians engaging in a different type of war, a spiritual one. They are risking their own lives to capture Muslim souls one at a time. In southern Russia, on the Eastern shore of the Caspian sea, sits Dagestan, the most dangerous province in the country. Muslims fight Russian forces almost daily to take over the province for Islam.
