Sexual Sin – John Piper

Psalm 51:12

Restore to me the joy of your salvation.
and uphold me with a willing spirit.

You keep your hand off that mouse, guys, the world will open up to you…

I don’t have any problem with us, you know, doing all kinds of things to surround  men and women with protections against sexual sin. I think that’s a good idea. It’s just not the main point. If that’s where you fight the battle continually, you will never get to the root of the issue. The root of the issue here is this renewed heart, this joy and gladness, that the bones that God had broken healed with the joy of our salvation.

The misuse of the beautiful gift of sex is a symptom of a disease, NOT the disease. And that’s why this psalm doesn’t mention it. And it’s the main issue. Or, we thought it was the main issue. It’s not the main issue. This is the main issue: RESTORE TO ME THE JOY OF YOUR SALVATION. Because when that joy fades, I click on pornography. When that joy fades, I start cruising the neighborhood. When that joy fades, I get an itch for another woman. When that joy fades, on, and on, and on, every sin on the outside is symptomatic of the absence of this joy.

What does your heart say about Christ? Late at night, all alone, in front of an internet screen, mouse ready to click. What does your heart say about Christ over pornography?

1 Thessalonians 4:7-8
For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness.
Therefore he who rejects this does not reject man, but God…

„And I pray that you would come upon this gathering, do a work that will ripple to the end of time and to the end of the world, in Jesus’ name Amen.”  Thousands were walking away from the dream they once dreamed  for global impact because of sexual sin in their lives and sexual failure in their past. Thousands who have dreamed a dream of being radically significant in the world, of doing something , laying down your life, sacrificing anything to spread the renown of Jesus Christ  to the cities and the nations and the campuses. And then, you lost it. And one of the huge reasons he said it was being lost is that there was so much guilt and a sense of unworthiness because of sexual failure, that the guilt and the unworthiness  finally bled down into a gnawing sense of spiritual powerlessness yielding the dead end street , the dead end dream of middle class  American comfortable secure security.

The great tragedy of Christian young people’s lives is not masturbation. It’s not fornication. It’s not being a peeping Tom, or a curious Cathy on the internet.  THE TRAGEDY IS THAT SATAN USES THE GUILT OF ALL THOSE FAILURES  TO STRIP YOU OF YOUR ONCE RADICAL  DREAM and to put in its place a life that is happy and safe and secure- American middle class  filled with superficial pleasures so that you some day die on your lake side rocking chair, wrinkled and useless and leaving a big fat inheritance to your middle aged children  to confirm them in their worldliness. That’s what he wants to sell you, because you failed so badly, and the only alternative is that, instead of what you once dreamed for Christ and His kingdom.

And, I have not come here to waste your time, or my time. I have come with the passion that you not waste your life! Our people are laid waste with sexual temptation. Why? Because our souls have shriveled up to the size of a TV sitcom. Can you imagine? Soaking in front of soaps or sitcoms for hours on end, and then going to a church where they don’t give a rip about theology and thinking that you’re gonna have any fiber in the tree of your faith? You’re just gonna get blown flat. That’s what’s gonna happen. And so, find the right church and read your Bibles and read the right books: Theology with passion for Jesus can conquer biology.

Sexual Sin: Every Sinful Heart is Prone to Struggle by David Platt

david platt

In a recent sermon on sexual sin, Pastor David Platt touched on the belief that all humans – not only homosexuals – are prone to struggle with different types of sexual sin.

„This is something that every sinful heart is prone to struggle with in some way or another,” Platt said in the sermon.

„If [Christians] roll our eyes and shake our heads when we see the Supreme Court ruling on this case, yet we turn the channels on our TVs to watch the trivialization of sex on shows and advertisements, to surf the Internet to find images in order to satisfy our lusts, to go to movies that glamorize sex … and entertain sexual thoughts and desires outside of our own marriage, then we have missed the entire point.”

Platt also reiterated his belief that biblical marriage consists of a union between one man and one woman.

„All throughout the Bible from cover to cover, sex is only celebrated … in the context of exclusive covenant relationship between a husband and wife,” Platt shared. “Period. There are no exceptions to that.”

In the midst of highlighting highlighting hyper-sexualized American culture, the pastor went on to express the thought that humans tend to set their minds on the flesh as opposed to God.

„According to [secular culture], we’re not human if we can’t please our bodies however we desire, so any attempts to limit sexual expression are seen as oppressive and inhumane,” Platt said. „We set our minds on the things of the flesh, which is hostile to God, and we exchange God’s Word for our experience.”

In a call for sexual purity, Platt asked Christians to be honest about their sexual sins and to pursue Godly accountability partners.

„So much of the power of sin is found in its secrecy,” Platt said. „Guard yourself with godly friendships and Gospel accountability.”

John Piper – For Men: Augustine, Sin and Sovereign Joy at Campus Outreach National Conference-Dec.31,2011

Source-   Campus Outreach website –

John Piper spoke to the men at the CO National Conference on December 31, 2011. He used the life of Augustine to relate to the men at conference. He referenced Augustine’s book Confessions.

„Read Romans 6. We are ensalved to sin or we are enslaved to God. There is no hovering in the middle. And the only way to move from here (sin) to here (God),  Augustine discovered biblically and experientially, is,, „I have to be set free. I can’t do it, I can’t do it'”. It doesn’t sound real „male”, so don’t try to be theologically machismo. Be theologically childlike. Unless you turn and become like a little child, you’ll never enter the kingdom of heaven. To be a child, you say, „God, I’m a slave. I’m a slave to cravings and desires and longings and yearnings. I can’t make myself love godliness. I can’t make myself love Jesus. I can’t make myself love chastity. I’m jet in love with all this stuff.”  That’s true, you can’t. That’s what Augustine discovered.

So let me read to you his amazing understanding of what happens.

During all those years of rebellion, where was my free will, where was the secret , hidden place from which it was summoned in a moment so that I might bend my neck to your easy yoke, o Lord? How sweet, all at once, it was for me to be rid of those fruitless joys which I had once feared to lose? You drove them from me. You, who are the true, the sovereign joy.

Can you imagine anything better than to be set free, not by sovereign wrath, or sovereign anger, or sovereign severity, but sovereign joy, meaning, well let’s keep reading:

You drove them from me …and took their place. You, who are sweeter than all pleasure. You, who outshine all light, yet are hidden deeper than any secret in our hearts. You, who surpass all honor, though not to the eyes of men who see all honor in themselves. Oh Lord, my God! My light! My Wealth! My Salvation!

The way grace works, according to Augustine, and he’s right about this. Biblically true, is that in grace God is giving us sovereign joy in himself, that triumphs over the pleasures of sin. Grace is God’s giving us freely, powerfully, a sovereign joy in Him that is superior to the pleasures of sin and thus, severs the root of their power. Any other way of trying to get free results in despair or legalism. Either you fail in despair or beat everybody else up with your self righteousness. But if you are set free by a blood bought, Christ exalting sovereign joy… you don’t boast in doing what you want to do, you boast if you do really hard things and people admire you and pity you ‘cause you sacrifice so much. So if you’re set free by God’s sovereign, supreme, superior joy you’re not only  free from, you’re now (not hovering here) but increasingly satisfied by what’s good and beautiful, and holy, and God exalting,  which means you can do what you want to do. That’s freedom. This is why I want the Second Coming yesterday. You know what’s gonna be best about the Second Coming? After seeing Jesus? Not sinning anymore. Not even battling sin. Not feeling the slightest inclination for any sin, anymore. Can you imagine a more magnificent freedom than to do what you wanna do for a billion years.

Augustine penetrated to the bottom of his own soul and to the bottom of the Bible when he realized every man „Every man, whatsoever his condition, desires to be happy. There’s no man who does not desire this, each one desires it with such earnestness that he prefers it to all other things. Whoever in fact desires other things, desires them for this end.” If that’s true, and it is, I believe, then the battle for godliness is the battle for joy. If you try to deny your quest for joy, you will deny that you are a human being. God made you to be happy. You wanna be happy like you wanna eat.

Saving grace, sanctifying grace, conveying grace for Augustine, is God giving us a sovereign joy  in God that triumphs over other joys. We can be free, and he gives us that gift now. Now, in measure. That’s why I began saying, „I wanna help you in the fight of faith, not the drift of faith, or the coasting of faith in 2012. It will be a fight. But, when you’ve tasted the sovereign joy, when the sovereign joy has laid decisive claim on the roots of your emotions and your heart, then you know you can fight in the strength that God supplies and get the victory.

In the last 10 minutes John Piper talks about how all of life is the pursuit of maximum pleasure….
