Aurora Borealis Over Penmon, Anglesey UK
27th February 2014

Time-lapse footage of the aurora display that covered the majority of the UK on the 27th Feb ’14, the result of a X4 solar flare that struck Earth. Taken from Penmon at Anglesey, as it gives a great view of the north horizon with little light-pollution (and its 2mins down the road!)

This was the last thing I expected to see after returning from Iceland and getting to see the aurora 5 times in 9 nights… I’d had no sleep as I was out til 2am shooting on our last night in Iceland and then flying back home.. I spotted a glow in the sky as I popped to the local shop and I figured it was worth a chance to check it out (I knew a big solar flare was on its way to us but didn’t figure we’d also see it here)

I got the camera set up and running and then I was running all over Penmon, waking people up in camper-vans, knocking on the holiday homes and getting everyone out to see it, including as many as I could from Facebook etc too! Its a once in a lifetime event probably, so as many need to see it as possible I reckon… 🙂

This footage was captured from 8pm until 11pm that evening, and shows the aurora sub-storms peaking several times in those few hours.

Please feel free to share, so that no-one has to miss this display! Individual images are/will be available at http://www.facebook.com/kriswilliamsphotos

Brand New Video – 02/19/2014
Missouri Northern Lights – Aurora Borealis

A nice, visible display of northern lights ( aurora borealis ) was visible in northern Missouri on 2/19/2014. It is rare to be able to see auroras this bright this far south. The northern lights pillars were reaching into space with their awesome red and green colors.

Aurora Borealis videos are still pouring in, however, we are excited to have the first film this year from our own proverbial backyard- the United States. Video by Shawn Malone. LakeSuperiorPhoto.com

ENGLISH:

Last week the sun blew out a mild coronal mass ejection, a storm of subatomic particles, toward Earth. Our planet’s magnetic field acted like a net, catching those particles, and funneling them down to the poles. When they slammed into the upper atmosphere, the atoms and molecules up there responded by glowing, creating an aurora.

Astrophotographer Göran Strand set up his camera and took some amazing shots of the display, and  created this time-lapse animation:

One of the best video compilations I have seen!

Aurora Borealis are a natural light phenomena that can be seen specially in the Earth Poles. The North Pole ones are called Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights, while the South Pole are Aurora Australis or Southern Lights. They appear because of a collision from the particles that form the sun wind against the magnetic fields of the Earth.
The scene of this video is Iceland, a place with amazing landscapes at any time of the year, but it’s in winter when this country attracts the most attention because of the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights.

Enrique Pacheco has made this video during many personal expeditions and workshops in Iceland from the last three years. Enrique Pacheco is an expert in Iceland landscape and Aurora Borealis shooting, with more than 12 successful trips. If you are interested in travel to Iceland and live this unique experience, Enrique Pacheco offers workshops, in which you’ll learn the time-lapse technique, improve your photography skills and enjoy the amazing phenomena of the Aurora Borealis. enriquepacheco.com/workshop-aurora-borealis-in-iceland

This video has been made with the time-lapse technique, using DSLR cameras to capture consecutive pictures and then put them together. Most of the shots have 10 and 20 seconds of exposition in between, were shot with wide lenses and with the maximum aperture. ISO 1600 and 3200 are the main ones.
