Cum ar suna o piesă la pian, dacă norii și-ar trece contururile peste clape? Cei albi și rarefiați ar suna a Erik Satie, sub greutatea norilor cumulus, ar răsuna Prokofiev, iar dacă cerul ar fi senin timp de 4 minute 33, l-am asculta pe John Cage.

Cloud piano, ultima instalație a lui David Bowen, permite o astfel de audiție în timp real. O cameră video înregistrează imaginea cerului care este apoi descompusă în 88 de secvențe, prelucrată în MaxMSP și transmisă unei structuri robotice care apasă clapele unui pian în funcție de forma norilor care trec. Dacă este detectat mai mult alb decât albastru, clapa corespunzătoare este apăsată. Tempoul și ritmul sunt influențate de rapiditatea mișcării. Chiar și cheia e dată de direcția de deplasare. Dacă norii se mișcă de la stânga la dreapta, pianul emite acorduri vesele, dar dacă direcția vântului se schimbă, piesa devine gravă. (http://www.modulab.ro/canta-norii-la-pian/)

This installation plays the keys of a piano based on the movements and shapes of the clouds. A camera pointed at the sky captures video of the clouds. Custom software uses the video of the clouds in real-time to articulate a robotic device that presses the corresponding keys on the piano. The system is set in motion to function as if the clouds are pressing the keys on the piano as they move across the sky and change shape. The resulting sound is generated from the unique key patterns created by ethereal forms that build, sweep, fluctuate and dissipate in the sky.
This installation was commissioned by L’assaut de la Menuiserie, Saint-Etienne, France and completed with support from the Visualization and Digital Imagining Lab and Weber Music Hall, University of Minnesota.
